The British can definitely be proud of their empire. They were pretty much the only ones to have figured the Middle-East out, and they did so in the 19th century or so. They had a better grasp of the Middle-East and the Islamic World then, than the Americans do now.

maybe in the immediate preceding to Ireland's independence, however, for the majority of the history in which Ireland was a part of the union they were treated far worse than the scots and this was mostly due to religious stigma. Protestant scots and protestant english were seen as the same race but the Catholic Irish were seen as lower and it showed with their under representation in places of power and wealth in comparison to the other people of Britain. This is why Irish nationalism was stronger to the point of the creation of terrorist organisations etc and why you never saw the same thing in scotland, or to the same extent at least.
