There are two things that I can't understand about the Catalan independence movement.
1. Why does the Spanish government refuse to acknowledge Catalonia's right to self-determination? They should follow Great Britain's example (Scotland referendum) and settle this issue following the rules of the game. Yet they keep using underhanded tactics to harass the Catalans (somewhat similar to the tactics they currently use against Gibraltar), which ends up motivating them even more.
2. Why do the Catalans have such a strong desire to separate from Spain? In the long run, the separation will prove to be harmful for their interests. They can only lose economical and political power if they decide to gain independence, like shooting themselves in the foot for pride.

In regards to the first point, Spain has something like 19 autonomous regions, many of them also with delusions of grandeur and relevance similar to that of catalonia. Losing one could potentially set off a chain reaction.
Also as i understand it, the idea of independence is quite popular in catalonia, compared to Scotland (apparently).
One more thing is that Catalonia is actually the wealthiest region of spain. If the wealthiest part of your nation wanted to secede you would probably deny them a vote too.
