technique - a way of carrying out a particular task, especially the execution or performance of an artistic work or a scientific procedure.

way - a method, style, or manner of doing something.

method - a particular form of procedure for accomplishing or approaching something, especially a systematic or established one.

procedure - a series of actions conducted in a certain order or manner.

off putting - unpleasant, disconcerting, or repellent.

beauty - a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.

art - the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

competent - having the necessary ability, knowledge, or skill to do something successfully.

success - the accomplishment of an aim or purpose

Given these definition of the terms, if the method chosen to produce a work of art leads to a work of art that is perceived as unpleasant, then the method has failed and cannot be called "competent".
