Any opinions on free drawing programs? Krita, Gimp, OpenToonz, etc.? I've used some terrible programs but some are really decent.
I'm a beginner and use firealpaca, it lacks some features but I like the simple pen and pencil configuration.
I use Krita and it seems to offer pretty much everything you might want, although the learning curve is a little steep and the available documentation isn't great.
Before that I used GIMP, which is also pretty complete but doesn't work with my current tablet.

I really love OpenToonz.
I pirated every-fucking-thing else. Why don't you all just do the same?
krita is probably the best free program out there.

What do non-free programs offer that krita doesn't?

i second this, it's not very fancy but it has all the features i need for most projects and a really easy interface
it's my number one recommendation for beginning artists or beginners at digital, if ur more experienced i think it's still useful

Photoshop blending tool is awesomesauce
It's a shame i didn't find pirated lazy nezumi

>awesomesauce
I use krita because pirated photoshop lacks a few features and it drives me insane.

I bought Lazy Nezumi. It was very helpful for a few things, but I rarely use it, and they want you to pay for updates is kinda shit.

What does PS lack? Or what do you think it lacks?

i pirated nezumi a while back, it doesn't appear to work anymore?
i don't trust buying it or using it anyway, since I've managed without it.
and there's other software that emulates line drawing, much better

Maybe I pirated it from a weird place because I'm a noob, but some very small features were missing and I nearly bashed my computer in.
then I took a breather, did some research, and installed krita.
I will actually buy photoshop when I have the money

krita has a steep learning curve, and feels heavy on poor ram, but imo is top tier. i like it much better than PS for drawing (performance aside)
Then myPaint is a fun little experience, but it feels better for sketching imo
There are free (as in beer) versions of adobe sketchbook and mischief, which are both very worth a try. The full Sketchbook pro is p decent, but i wouldn't pay for it.

I really enjoy MyPaint, especially if you don't have experience with making your own brushes. The premade ones are fantastic and the program runs pretty smoothly. That being said, it doesn't run properly on my new computer so you'll have to see if it works for you.

Does anyone have any recommendations for free software to turn a raster image into SVG?
I've found a few online tools which work OK, but I feel there is probably something a bit more powerful out there.
Also, can anyone recommend some good tutorials for MyPaint? I'm really liking it's inking tool but the rest of it seems kind of clunky and I can't work out what all the brush settings actually do.

Non destructive mirror view.

Try inkscape, Path -> Trace Bitmap
