It's pretty amazing sculpture and Takashi Murakami is very good, profilic artist, one of the best if it comes to contemporary art.

I tell you - it's deliberate, you see it in sculpture but maybe it's easier to see on paintings where often artists leave areas out of focus with much less detail than areas where they want you to look at.

You have to understand that the worth of the dollar is extremely relative.

$15 million is an insane amount of money for you and me, but to a multi-millionaire that's chump change.

The reason you can't sell your art for millions is because you don't have the same amount of acclaim that Murakami has.

Just because something is "worth" millions doesn't mean it's actually worth millions, and even then can you really be the one to say "this is worth this much, and that is worth that much." It's just what the rich decide it's worth because they're the one with the money, not you.

You are right about money and a sense of scale in spending it. A few more zeros in the paycheck equals a few more zeros in what I would call Casual Spending.

I attended a craft show last weekend, and what I saw was eye opening. In this pic are candle holders made from antique toys and doll parts. The artist would scour e-bay for materials and assemble them with either wax candles or electric fixtures in mind, and sell them for 3-500 bucks a pop! And he mentioned that certain chain stores would buy lots of 100 from him and mark them up even further. Another guy would track down authentic album covers and make handbags out of them and sell them from 250-350 each. He mentioned that "stars" would ramble into booths of his and buy a bunch at a time, and I believed him. Neither candle holders or handbags would be things *I* would want, but I am sure they have a demand from people with enough cash to indulge themselves.

But 15 million for DragonBall Jizz?

I'd like to see the one who bought it. Sounds like an exhibit in themselves...
>>
Who cares? Its weird and interesting. Why does everyone on this thread constantly bitch about the art industry. Its the same lame argument made in music; "theres so many talented musicians out there that don't get recognition but the stupid talentless ones do! boo hoo!".... Why not instead of being a special snowflake that appreciates "real art", maybe "dumb" yourself down a little and you might learn something; at least the ability to not let stuff like this bother you and be somewhat normal.
>>
As well it should

Picture this. Aunt and sister invite me with their children to go to Brooklyn Museum to see this exhibition. Very innocent cute anime flowers highly chromatic graphic colors. A couple furry girls walking around no big deal. Every body is enjoying the pictures the designs we turn right, we turn left. Walk around a partition all of a sudden.... this statue popping jizz in your face scarring your children for life.

... seriously fucked up pham. Everybody clammed up.

>>
Yes, 15mil isn't much money under the circumstances like the other anons said. That's because this is an investment. Murakami's value will almost certainly increase over time due to his gallery representation increasing. Even more so post mortem. So this sculpture was bought for 15mil, but it won't sell for any less.
>>
All you really need is one good artwork to get critical acclaim, then you can shit out whatever and people will be tripping over themselves to justify why it's deep. Like that guy who made those fake banksy paintings.

Murakami is a straight up troll. People don't read his actual thoughts and assume his work or the work of his friends is a "biting denouncement of tasteless objectifying anime" or w/e when in reality a lot of the people working for him are completely unironic otaku perverts. A guy who says he's into lolicon to "live out his fantasies without harming anyone", a guy who's a 'sexy anime girls' figure sculptor, etc.

His entire point is that there shouldn't be a barried between "low art" and "high art" and he tends to give jobs to (the aforementioned guys) or simply feature the art of (animators like Yoshinori Kanada) people whose work is considered "low brow" to make a point about the art world being (his wording, not mine) "pretentious"

He does have some weird conflicting nationalisty thoughst about the "infantilization of japanese culture" post-war but despite this he has a genuine respect for the nerd culture-approved artists he showcases and sees Kanada's animation for example as a natural evolution of classic Japanese art.

I actually talked to the guy who curated his first art show in the west whose writing talked about the "possibility" that he's saying "otaku shit is immoral and wrong" and he admitted that in retrospect he was completely wrong. But most other rich people are still falling for what he's doing hook line and sinker.

Basically what he does is trick rich people who think anime is degenerate trash into buying super-expensive versions of mass-produced otaku figures of large boobed huge assed anime and video game girls and that is fucking hysterical to me.

Also he's worked with the creator of fucking Eiken and is friends with the guy. He's tricked Britney Spears into cosplaying as a character from a lolicon ecchi manga by that guy to subtly protest against the anti-lolicon law suggested in 2011 without telling her the source of the illustrations she was copying. Then after she did the photoshoot he admitted it and said his stance on the issue (basically "all of it should be protected by the law as art")
