Take regular breaks, get a better monitor (doesnt have to be super expensive), install f.lux and get eye drops if needed. I had huge problems with eye strain, bloody eyes, tiredness etc. and since I did all of the above, it's infinitely better.

Serious question, does a better monitor help by a lot? And if so how?
>>
turn down brightness, install a redfilter and turn on the lights when it's dark.

Computer glasses are a thing. I have a pair and they seem to work. My eyes feel strained without them after only an hour, but I can go for much longer without discomfort while using them.

Yes. I had a shitty old-ass monitor and bought a nicer one used. I don't know what the science is behind it, but my new monitor is a breeze for my eyes.

Your new monitor probably has LED backlight. It's much easier on the eyes than CFL.

use an matte screen

I have an shitty shiny monitor at my non-art job and a decent matte one at home. I have to stay at my home pc for about 4 time more for my eyes to start feeling sore.

The glaring is the one putting strain on your eyes.

also a bonus:

when I bough a new monitor I bough one with high resolution for it's size, and that again puts strain your eyes. Now I have to buy a new monitor with the same resolution but bigger.

having 2 monitors with different pixel size can help me tell the difference. an icon on one is smaller on the other, and because of that you need your monitor to stay at a different distance from you to see the details just as good

1080p is too small for 21.5 inchs, but how your healthy your eyes is also a factor so it can be different from one person to other. there is no one size fits all so you have to find what you are comfortable with

No PWM flicker and lower blue light emission.
