Post digital illustrations that you consider to be so mindblowingly, absolutely ceiling-hittingly cock-hardeningly good, that they sit easily above what 98% of artists would ever possibly be able to achieve. basically shit that is just the best of the best of the best.

if you post mullins and the usual suspects try to be selective. try to post even their work that is their very best.

Theo is definitely one of the best around, especially in the last couple years he has really exploded in quality and originality. That said, Mullins still has a few decades experience on him and is way way more versatile, and it really shows in his art. I'm excited to see where Theo takes his art over the next few years/decades though. His stuff has a very unique quality to it.

The vast percentage of people who support his Patreon and youtube wouldn't have the eye to even see the quality difference between those two pieces, and that's not even his best piece to be quite honest.
He's also busy working on other things too as far as I know, he talked about some book on his deviantart, which I imagine is where his biggest effort is going into, not these 1/2 day youtube vids he shits out.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Mullins shadow handling. I know he makes them lighter then the usual artist does, but I just don't get how he makes it work.Everything just works perfectly together, the light shadows and costrasts.
damn you mullins.
>>
>>2521940
It'd be arrogant of me to say I completely understand it, but I think color and value are always relative to each other no? You can make really light values look dark depending on their relationship to other values.

Something else I'm thinking is that you can control the "exposure" of the image; so if you make the lighter forms less detailed and attention-grabbing you can get a wider range of values on your shadow side.

Maybe, I dunno.

looking at what >>2525381 thinks is "the best of the best of the best.", I can also see the kinds of things that appeal to him - character-based fantasy art with a clear focus. These aren't bad exactly, but I was wondering how does one actually go about improving their taste and build an appreciation of the finer subtleties that make a piece genuinely top-tier?

>>2525808
>how does one actually go about improving their taste and build an appreciation of the finer subtleties that make a piece genuinely top-tier?

Read 'concerning painting' by kenyon cox and look at art history and why painters painted what they painted, what informed their subjects. Most of the stuff in this thread is lame because it has medium-high tier execution (as far as the entirety of painting goes) and the subjects are informed by the current commercial landscape: videogame and movie concept art is pretty much what sells and what is informing these works. Even if this stuff is genuinely what the artist is interested in, (s)he is interested in it because (s)he spends most of their life behind a computer/tv/movie screen consuming these commercialized stories.

Contrast this with artists of old, who, although they made paintings to sell, the subject matter was informed by experiences of living their life- getting out there into the world. Because their work is informed by experiences from their individual, one-of-a-kind life, it is inherently more substantial than the works by these digital artists, who are all informed by the same commercial media from the last 30-50 years- media which was designed to appeal to masses.

again, this is good, but by no means great. It's some simple story of a nameless monster thing in a nameless alien place that's the same as all the other nameless alien places.

Pic in this and
>>2526023
are examples of medium-tier traditional painting that blow almost everything in here out of the fucking water. That's not to say that digital isn't potentially just as good, see:
>>2521916
as an example of digital work that's actually almost hanging in there with the old greats.

I worked at a print shop and just do poster prints of whatever at cost, and mount them on foamboard. I print my only work that way to sell, too. It tends to run about $0.30 per 10x12".

The sky is blue most of the time due to Rayleigh Scattering and is only not blue in exceptional cases like extreme smog or during sunset/sunrise. Shadows are simply an absence of light, so they can be black such as at nighttime or on the moon or in certain indoor settings.

You are being intentionally obtuse though to say an artist is bad for using green to paint a subject whose local colour is green. Yes, he used a really saturated green, and most artists will shift that a bit towards yellow or dull the colour a bit, but if you have ever spent time outside you would know that sometimes grass or other plants can be shockingly green at times depending on lighting (typically when backlit slightly and perhaps more at certain times of year like spring). And even if it was outside of the realm of reality, who gives a fuck. Is John Asaro a shit artist because he paints things the "wrong" colour?

I hate how /ic/ loves to use one insignificant nitpick about something they put an iron rule on, and then blow it out of proportion to say an entire piece or artist is worthless.

That's nice, but this thread is for advanced painters. Not good or average. Zapata isn't shit, I quite like some of his pieces but he's far from advanced. He's a good intermediate. That's about it. His use of color is really underwhelming and rather one dimensional. He's a amateur compared to the likes of Theo Prins and Sergey Kolesov.
>>
>>2526399
Oh I actually agree with everything you say here. I just wanted to shut down the line of reasoning that using green means you are a bad painter which is what >>2526352 implied. Zapata is a solid pro but far from the best of the best. Though I'd say almost every single image in this thread is pretty far from the best of the best.

I'm easily impressed.

Also, there's a painting that's mindblowing for me but I can't remember the name. It's an art school and there's lots of paintings hanged around the walls, all of them greatkly detailed. I think it's post-renaissance and the scene looks a lot like School of Athenes by Raphael. Anyone knows which one I mean?

fucking ace. i honestly think he got spooked by us. i think he got spooked by /ic/ and those threads were people posted side by side comparisons of the master paintings he would borrow from. he got nervous and now keeps his work under lockdown and probably only lets clients see his galleries.

>i think he got spooked by /ic/ and those threads were people posted side by side comparisons of the master paintings he would borrow from
As the guy who posted those I hope that's not the case. I think he just is busy with work and taking care of his wife and kid. He has no reason to post online for marketing either since every art director already knows him and he has a lot of steady top clients already. Plus he had already stopped posting things and stopped being active online by the time those comparisons ever were posted, and it's unlikely he ever would have come across anything posted here of all places.
>>
>>2530020
Yes - they likely played with the hues to make it more green at the end.

I like your edit a LOT better, too.
>>
>>2530020
There might be some minor colour adjustments they did at the end, but probably it was mostly painted that way. Looking at the rest of their work they tend to be a fan of a green cast to the images. I wonder if it is just taste or if they are slightly red-green colour blind because the reds and greens are a bit heavy-handed in some images.
