Can I actually make a decent living and not want to kill myself as an artist, or should I just stick to it as a hobby?

seconded. antidepressants taste delicious
You definietly can. However there is very little demand for beginner/intermediate artists with generic ideas. if you stand apart from the crowd with excellence and a creative vision and you wont have to live with the salery or tasks of a coporate cuckold.
This advice goes for any career pursuit. But the ambitions needed for this is stagering; hence why many people don't follow it. The alternative to this is to build a post scarcity socialist utopia where you can make a wage doing whatever you want.
what are your other options?
Who cares? Ur life is meaningless. Art is for fun
I'd recommend, unless you're incredibly passionate about it, to keep it as a hobby.
If you ever get presented with a good opportunity to do it as a job seize it, but don't put your eggs in that basket.

Stick to it as a hobby, seriously. Doing art isn't even a career, it's shit-paying job and/or constant life of freelancing hell with very, very high competition. It's not worth it.
unless you can land an in-house job you'll be freelancing which is depressing as hell. have fun being in your 40s and designing cereal boxes
>It sucks
Now Ill have to think whether you guys actually mean it or just want one less competitor

What are my chances for in house? I wouldnt mind drawing shovels for EA all day
