Environment art thread? Every thread on this board seems to be about figure drawing.

Post progress/tips/crits/whatever
>>
Seconding this thread. Mostly looking for books on the subject. There are a million books on figure drawing but I'm having trouble finding resources on environment art that aren't Alyn Crawshaw's "Watercolour landscapes for pensioners" type books.

yes.

In all seriousness though, your rock spikes need to be lit and cast shadows on the rest of the environment to be believable. I also think your background is too dark (full black I believe, unless my laptop monitor is playing tricks on me). You probably don't want it /that/ black, so you can have some slight variations to indicate shape in it.

No fundamentals here whatsoever. Those temples are cylinders, render them like cylinders. And your brush marks on the ground don't mean anything at all.. just a big mess.

pen brush for that majority of the balck lines. fine liner for small ass details i cant get away with on the brush pen. a decent assortment of prismacolors and copics. and a white sakura gellyroll gel pen for the whites you see.

forgot to add the prismacolor blues. i use pb134 and pm 39.

What would be a better way to detail those trees, anon?
>>

For a colour study your colours are pretty off. Right now you are stuck in painting what you think the colours are and not what they actually are. "the sky is blue" and you paint it blue. But in the ref it is very grey. "those buildings are beige" so you paint it beige. Well, it's receiving a very warm sun from a sunset/sunrise, so they are very orange but you missed that.

Watch Shaddy's tutorial on youtube. You are completely ignoring shape design which is one of the most important aspects of landscape painting. Your trees aren't drawn from careful observation and simplification but rather noodled without any direction. As a result it looks like a muddy mess. Try separating the light and shadow side of the trees in two values before painting anything else.

You're assuming I didn't notice the blaring difference in saturation between my ref's sky and the painting.

I can eyeball colors and try to copy them exactly, but that's not always very fun or useful. I'm trying to step out of my comfort zone and understand better what colors can do, actually because I'm not good at anything other than copying colors verbatim. I don't fault you for pointing out these two pics aren't the same color, because I didn't provide much context and that's on me.

Was trying to do something fun with the color - double complementary harmony, except with one of the pairs (yellow-blue) split top-bottom (not sure what that's called, if it even has a specific name). The ref's sky had a big difference in saturation, so I adjusted it, because I didn't want the focus to be on the saturation contrast as much as the hue contrast.

I made a edit in photoshop so you can see the separation between light and shadow in the trees better. Can you see how you are missing a lot of information? There are some very distinct shapes in there. It can be tricky to see sometimes since landscapes have so much going on. Good luck, this shit isn't easy.

Had a couple hours to do another study today. My concern is still about color relationships, though I tried to pay attention to the "essence" and rhythm of shapes. Doing that with trees is hard! I actually think my rendering came out pretty crappy and would probably pick a different subject matter next time.

Also did an undercoat, and grabbed Shaddy's brushes which are much better than what I was using.

wow this is really gorgeous
your values on the left right middle (green splotch) are weird. i dont know if this area just needs definition or something but it's just kind of.. there.. something about it really bugs my eye lol. lovely study
which program are you using?
>>
>>2513570
i think the problem may be that it's at the same value as parts of the mid ground tho its in the background, so it kind of jumps to the front.
>>
>>2513504

It's a bit messy close up but the thumbnail reads very well. The colors are all good.

The left... right... middle? You lost me, anon. Do you mean the leftmost part of the picture, under the horizon? Because that's the only place I can think of that could kinda match.

Apologies for how messy it is up close. That's a combination of new brushes + difficult/unfamiliar subject (fuck those trees) + low time spent. I'm excited to see what these brushes can do though, might try to integrate them to a default round + soft workflow since that's what I like best, but these seem way easier to practice underpaint with.
>>
>>2513595
LOL left right middle. i should proof read my posts.
i meant the left side, center of the page, on the horizon
>>
>>2513609
Welp, I was lazy and forgot to paint trees there lmao. It actually doesn't hurt the composition to have a space without dense, mid-ground trees (they're everywhere in the ref), but you're right that it should have been fogged up more to detach the midground from it.

Well someone already replied and their answer was pretty on point.

I did a paintover for you anyway. That's cool that you're not copying the photo 1 to 1, I get that.

When you go off course it's even more important then to understand that you're painting 3D forms. Those trees are cylinders and the ground is a flat plane. They need to have form shadows, and cast and receive cast-shadows. Don't worry about brush textures.
