Alright boys, it's time of this thread again.

Commission thread. how to get into making them, where the best place is to gather them. the best tactics for marketing yourself.

I want to jump in but am a little hesitant. I'm not looking to rake in a shit ton of money, but rather just a little cash on the side. But because of this, I need to set a training regimen to be ready in a month or so. One where I can easily replicate common poses people ask for. I think of doing studies of a handful of successful artist who do commissions and going from there.

anyone with experience in this? been through this? got stories to tell and tips to share? slap them in here

is blindly jumping into it really the best move though?

Better to jump than to have never jumped at all.

Starting early is always better than starting too late.

I guess your right, thanks

If you ever take career advice from /ic/, you're putting yourself at a major disadvantage. To seemingly everyone on this board, "commissions" exclusively means getting random requests from individuals online to draw some fan art, porn or "OC", usually found via social media sites. Even worse - many people here suggest making a sort of fast-food-style menu where people can customize their commission. The fees for these commissions are often sub $100.

Get your freelance advice elsewhere. I recommend buying freelance illustration eBooks & physical books and reading them cover to cover. These will give you a great foundation of how to start finding work with high-paying, commercial clients. Search for material most closely related to your field of interest in illustration.

600$ 'job', massive workload
100$ 'commission', tiny workload

who's laughing now faggot?

I don't understand what point you're trying to make. A $600 job and a $100 job can be the exact same amount of work.

The big money in illustration comes from the license you sell to use the work - not the time you put into the creation of the work.

Totally agree with your sentiment of not getting advise from this board.

To add there is also plenty of working artists that share information about the industry they work in or how they got started on stuff like youtube and other social media sites. You could even contact artists you like, or that have similar style to you, ask them how they got started. Not everyone may answer back but even if a few do that could give you a good starting place.

There is no point in listening to any career advice on IC, this board is only good for some crit and art drama. 99% of the anons on here are neets who don't know what the hell they're talking about. Go find information put out by real working artists that you can verify are actually getting jobs.

Thanks!

I should have mentioned this too. This is a great way to get an idea of what the next step is to take in your career. People are often willing to help if you're respectful. If you're going to ask someone for advice though - keep it brief. No sob storys, and no essays. Briefly state how & why you enjoy your work, and ask if they have any words of wisdom for a struggling artists. Often times, a good question to ask is "Is there anything you wish you knew before you got start in *occupation*"

bump. more advice please.

I think you've gotten pretty much all you need. A lot about running your own business is not being afraid to fail, because you're going to a lot.

Don't get trapped thinking you need to find all the perfect advice or information on how to do it "right" before you start or you never will. At some point you need to just jump in or you never will. Keep making work constantly, keep improving, post it to social media and make sure it's obvious how to contact you. (put your website url on your images)

Other than that go find products or companies that hire artists with work similar to yours and get a contact email for their art directors, send them in samples. You're going to go through a long period of not getting called/emailed back while your work improves but between constantly putting work out there and direct contacting people eventually you're going to get something.

I think a lot of it is being patient and not thinking you're going to just go out and find work ASAP. That is unless you want to do commission work and then you just find places where individuals commission work and post your samples in those areas and haggle with them for the fee.

I mean honestly, there is a near endless wealth of info put out by working artists on youtube. If you can't even be bothered to go search out video content full of useful shit and you just want someone spoon feed you then you'll never make it.

You're too lazy.

I think you all are over-estimating my talents. As op, I know I'm still a novice, but I'm reaching a level where I could pull in 2 or 3 commissions a week of about 30-40$ per and be happy. If I jump feet first into a commercial client, not only will I be un-equipped to put out work at a level they want, but I can also end up swamped, attempting to create work that I don't have the means of creating

never the less, I know this information is valuable and I hope it has helped some anons out

start drawing and posting weird furry shit until all the weird furries start paying you money for it and then eventually less weird furries will filter in and then differently weird furries will filter in and then at some point you're well known enough that people just assume you're good enough to pay hundreds of dollars and you ride that wave until you die

ive got a list of questions and would appreciate any two cents yall can give

how can one reach out and promote themselves?

would reblogging commission info once a blue moon come off as annoying? ive seen some do it

is it a given that you can post the works you did on your blogs?

whens a good time (in both following and skill) to start?

would it be annoying to higher prices as you get better?

how do you deal with horrible clients? the ones you dont know are horrible until halfway through

how do you deal with slander?

how do you deal with offended people?

whats a good way to set up commissions?

whats a good way to set up commission info?

would it be okay, if you cant do the work, to recommend an artist friend that can?

are there any good sites for this kind of work?

is the jury still out on paypal allowing adult content? if so what are some good alternatives?

lastly
how's /ic/'s commissions going?
