thoughts on graffiti. not the shit 12 year olds kids do im talking planned out walls and such, i always wondered what other people thought about THIS kind of graffiti, the "artistic side"
>>
Used to do a fair bit of it before getting caught,

viewed graffiti as a great creative exercise for my other illustrations, as its drawing the same thing over and over again... but different.

very much enjoyed the aspects of getting together with a team to collaborate on a wall with different ideas.
>>
>>2485954
i admire people that can do it well, and it's a pretty amazing thing to study if you want to improve your eye for making appealing shapes , since it's the 1 thing carrying the piece. insanely underrated
>>
>>2485954
Bro I've made quite a bit of money doing murals and graffiti work. It's cool it's appealing and pretty easy to learn if you've been drawing a while. I switched over to airbrush... But I just bought 4 cans last night and i kinda wanna start in again. Super quick jobs.
>>
i think the most beautiful graffiti is throw ups, its like a cartoon vs fine art comparison where throws are cartoon and fine art is pieces

throws are all about doing a lot with a little
>>
If you do it on your own shit or with permission of the owner then whatever, personally I never liked any of it. Spraying private property without permission however, is vandalism and it's a sign of absolute degeneracy. If you do that, then I hope you get caught by the owner and that he breaks all your fucking fingers. If you can't get anyone to let you spray that shit on their property then maybe it's actually not as appealing as you think.

3:00 AM solo missions, brah.

Climbing to the roof of a 10 story abandoned building in the hood just to hang over the side of the roof and do rollers.

I used to be hardcore into that shit, but am not so much anymore. Once you have a job, graft becomes very hard to do. But then again, I do know some hardcores who have families and still paint! :)
>>
>>2486684

Buttery tags are my favorite shit. I can piece. Its fun. But so much time and paint. Tags are cheap. Look cool. Easy to be up
>>
Happy to see the positive reaction. Im a graffiti writer myself and graffiti is the artform that got me into other forms of art. I love graffiti to death tho.

from the perspective a graffiti writer who is currently writing a memoir on the subject

what you call graffiti here isn't. it looks like it, it smells like it, but it's not. graffiti is a performative, in situ, illegal form of art. the paint on the wall is only what is left of this performance, not the graffiti itself. what you are showing in this pic is an uninspired mural, a mere decoration, an image of graffiti. this is why "graffiti" or "street art" on canvases or galeries is fucking stupid, pointless and embarrassing. i guess you could already tell it by the systematic, complete lack of understanding of notions like composition or color matching.

pic related: actual graffiti

>>
>>2485954
some of the pieces look cool if completely illegible , im impressed that people can work on something so large and have it come out more or less as intended.
>>
>>2488249
i guess that to you, graffiti art means spray can, drips, with every color of the spectrum mashed together? this is just a scheme to sell shitty canvases. are you actually shocked that a form of art exists that is free and public and actually costs money without earning any?

>>2488248

>>2488242
ok humble geniuses, can you explain me where i'm wrong instead of saying i'm dumb? is it the word "performative"?

when i walk down a random street and see a few tags by a person, i can usually tell with decent precision what where the tools used, (like guessing the brand of the can and the cap- it's not incredible, some old timers were able to actually name colors) what was the time of the day, how experienced is the guy, what he tried to do, who are his influences, etc. to you, it's an eyesore, to me it's a language. even if i don't like 95% of what i'm seeing in the streets.

or you guys never thought that some nerds would pick up graffiti as a hobby and, one day, stop and wonder why they are actually sacrificing their lives for?
>>
>>2488259
come on, anybody?
i need to be enlightened on how street art doesn't need to actually be in the street and about when a painting on canvas stops to be a painting on canvas and becomes graffiti.
>>
>>2488267
nobody cares about your opinions
>>
>>2488270
well i had six posts of people caring enough to tell me i'm in the wrong but none to explain why.

if graffiti wasn't illegal, it would just have been a fad over since decades, not the worldwide artistic movement we know.

there's no shame in being misinformed about something you never have been interested in
>>
>>2488270
and by the way, you are posting in a thread specifically created for people to express their opinion on this very subject.
i'm sorry if my answer isn't "i like it when it's beautiful"

Not who you are replying too, but you can tell major brands & caps apart by looking, compare a tag done with ironlak to exports, and different caps produce different outputs

maybe you could make this with a pencil, light, all the time in the world. this guy did it with spraycans, a limited amount of time, possibly no light, all while stopping every 20 seconds to check if that weird noise isn't a security dog. you guys don't realize at all the process that leads to a graffiti. that's what we can see and you can't. (pic related)

guess the concept of working and taking risks without expecting anything but broken bones and legal complications sounds pretty foreign to you, but i can't blame you. yet i still find weird when i have to explain that this is art to people who admit drawing furry porn to get by as a valid form of artistic expression.

maybe you went around your neighborhood with a few drunk teenagers scribbling dumb shit on clean walls one night or two, but i still don't think you have a lot of perspective about what this movement is and why it's here, or about the range of emotions you can expect from doing it. ever spent three nights in a row hidden in some bushes looking at a train depot? popped manholes in a foreign country to go run on high tension powered railways? seen your name on top the highest building of your city?
good for you for growing up. hope you're happy with your life.
>>
>>2488259

these are frescoes, murals, painting legally on a wall is hardly a new thing. they certainly have a place in graffiti culture, as most graffiti writers will paint at least a few, but they are not the essence of graffiti.

the colorful burner will help speculators achieve gentrification of a neighborhood, while the graffiti will indicate a bad place, lawless, that you want to avoid. you can make money with the first, not the second.

they actually are two very different things, this is why they are perceived so differently. if legal burners and burners were the most evolved form of graffiti, graffiti wouldn't exist.
>>
>>2488330
Nah, it actually pretty interesting to do.
>>
>>2488336
Put a dymark touch up cap on a black export and you can't tell if it was done by an export or irolak with a skinny hardcore cap.
>>
>>2488419
Different cans have different opacities and thickness.

Some paint is so thick that it's like coating a wall with rubber, other brands are so watery it's almost like pissing on a wall.

I used to do a ton of graffiti in my shitty suburban neighbourhood until I grew up and it felt to irresponsible. Was a lot of fun though. Am now trying to revisit it through tattooing, which I can actually do something with instead of just inflate my ego. Pic is some shitty thing I.did years ago

Sadly this is what a lot of people who "graff" actually think.

The 2deep4u scene is full of literal niggers/junkies/idiots

They do it to get attention and feel important seeing their little "tags" everywhere.

It's very sad once you realise this is 30+ year olds still doing this autism, and often getting prison time for it...

I guess everyone has to have a hobby..

If you go even deeper then they say only trains count

Pieces are more impressive imo. Any idiot can tag.
>>
>>2491694
To put it simply, you'd have to have experience doing hand styles in order to be able to read the more complicated ones.

>>2492149
it's been almost 50 years already, we just have to overcome the stigma that comes with every new art form. people would laugh at the idea of making comics in art school at that time.

>>2492184
i only disagree with the end of this post: "Pieces are more impressive imo. Any idiot can tag.". and i mostly do pieces. actually, it's pretty easy to do pieces (won't even talk about legal ones). but when i see an actual good writer with 10+ years of experience making a good tag… damn it is good. so many parameters to master.

just forgot to say people feel graffiti has no potential since there is absolutely no filter between the artist and the viewer. disinterest from the public usually keep terrible artists off the radar. but any graffiti, doesn't matter how ugly it is, will still be shoved down your throat.
>>
If it's not done illegally, it's not graffiti. If you can't do hands, and only piece, you're not a writer. Hands/tags are the purest form of graffiti. If you do throws 1 foot tall, 4 feet off the ground, stop wasting paint and just quit. Instagram self promotion is a joke.
