Yeah. You don't really do anything once you get back from school/work. Once you come home, that's it, you stay inside until till it's time to sleep and then get up the next day and repeat. So you have some solitary hours to fill with hobbies.
Maybe there is also an element of escapism and desire for individualism, growing up around cookie cutter houses placed on identical squares of tidy lawn. Seeing everyone's dad come home at the same hour every day, putting on a suit and manicuring their comb-over every morning, etc. Playing the game for the privileged of being a middle class slave.
