Why is this place so negative and pessimist when it comes to an art career?
>>
>>2454373
Because we're all failures, or expect to be...
Or we're discouraging people from entering the industry so that it's easier for us.
>>
>>
>>2454381
cause art school makes you good automatically. I forgot
>>
>>2454385
No one ever said that. The only thing that this chart shows is a large percentage of people who go into art (regardless of skill, but they were willing to spend the money to go to an art school) do not end up working in an art related field.
>>
>>2454385
its really diffifcult to compete in the art world where literal nobodies gets more money than you drawing without an art degree

sakimi chan, kron, oda, shadman, incase, jjaques all void of a professional art certificate but make big bux as an artist.
>>
It's a meme.
>>
>>2454391
To be fair, art schools are shit nowadays. You can reach the levels of those artists just by using the w-ic-i.
>>
Build a fan base and then art

That's disappointing but probably not that far out of line with most of the liberal arts and humanities.

Also, like the liberal arts and humanities, I'm sure that a lot of art majors from liberal arts and research universities study art with no intention of working in the field, using it rather as proof of having a degree. We all know about business people who took the critical thinking and communication skills they learned in majors other than business and used it to build successful careers in a variety of fields.
>>
>>2454373

because it's an absolute joke of a career. i'm embarassed to ever have fallen for this load of shit.

enjoy making 15k a year all your life
>>
Because we don't actually enjoy art, we just want others to circlejerk over how 'skilled' we are.
>>
>>2454381
Artists are literally 10%. If you really wanted to be an artist, you would be that 10%. Otherwise you're just a hobbyist.
>>
>>2454402
lol hell you'll be 10 times better just browsing /ic/

goddamn the western education system is fucked
>>
>>2454480
yup all those illustrators and concept artists only make $15k/year

those glassdoor statistics were lying to me about studio artists making ~$40k

yeah good luck getting your stomach pumped 100 times from all the cum you'll have to swallow on facebook before you get hired. think of me when you are on your knees with the cocks of incredibly shitty but popular artists way down your throat and you copy paste comments from elsewhere 'haha wow yeah that is such a great picture haha i really love your use of color dodge Wojtek!', 'oh wow Ricky Martinez you are so cool can you follow me back? I want to be your bro and learn from you because you are so good haha, love your stuff!' Think of me when you finally get that job and you feel like a disgusting whore and can't get rid of the stench of cum oozing out of your every pore. And then think of me when you start realizing the stuff you work on at the studio is total trash and it's just like any other shitty office job + extra tendonitis. Oh and you can deduct 20k from your first annual salary for that surgery to stitch your asshole back to normal size too.

think of me anon.
>>
>>2455137
I know literally no one who has done that.

You guys need to stop being fixated on your concept art "heroes" and start thinking about how to build a presentable portfolio and find studios that are actually hiring. Go where the demand is.

I knew this thread was shit but I wanted to know if there's anybody sane on this board.

There's very few it would seem, unfortunately.
>>
it's sorta the thing with 4Chan, there's not cunt here that's help you

the art criticism you'll get is from pretenders that operate out of spite
>>
I tried to be artist, really tried, I even got hired for one project to illustrate stuff, but ended up (in same company) being some sort of designer for sport gear shit
Now I 3D all day, sketch out gear, do meetings and create mockups for print sometimes
I use my photoshop only to collage 3d and photos for a upcoming construction project

I'm needed, but my dream to be digital artist is illusive now.
Did some studies yesterday. My skill is seriously degraded and I have a feeling that I will never catch up.
>>
>>2455292

Just do a good job and try to climb the corporate ladder. Your dream is a nightmare in disguise.

Because only boring/dangerous/difficult shit gets you paid IRL

It's hostile because these two types of people exist in spades on IC.

First you have the people who claim all the jobs pay no money and they wasted their time doing art. Meanwhile their art is at a low skill level, entry level or worse. But they think they're way better than they are so when all they can get is low paying work they're like "fuck that". They feel like they're entitled to more money and don't understand most pros spent a long time grinding out those sorts of jobs before they went on to better paying work. Just like at any job. So obviously it's going to be hard for them, but they come on here and rant trying to make other people feel bad because they feel bad. This also assumes they're even for real and not just making shit up about looking for work.

The second type is lazy neets who don't know shit about anything but get off on trying to discourage other people because they're too lazy to do it themselves and rather play dota all day. They feel better convincing themselves it's impossible and no one can do it.....despite the thousands of working artists that actually do it.

These sorts of threads are pointless because it's just a bunch of anecdotal statements with no proof ever given. Complainers never post their work or where they're applying to, it's all just a bunch of bullshit. If people want information on working in art related fields you'd be better served going to youtube and finding actual working artists talking about their experiences.
>>
>>2455338
I second this post and add that you almost never see professionals or employed jr artists post on here because this place is basically a gym where a bunch of peachfuzz teenagers hang out to make fun of anyone actually trying to better themselves.

It took me about a year or so of practice to get good enough to make a living off of freelance concept/illustration work, and after a certain level of improvement, only trolls and shitposters would respond to my work.

in reality, 99% of the melodrama about not being able to make it on this board is because its full of entitled lazy fucks who never draw, so don't let the cynics fool you into thinking that it's impossible to make it.

jfc I know my school aint the best but i can admit ive gotten so much better since being here
>>
>>2455338

all of that is true, but don't forget that there are 3 or 4 people that actually worked their asses of and have a significant amount of skill, even though they don't post often because of those previously said shitposters. It's a handful, but there are professional or close to professional level people in here.
>>
>>2455387
>It took me about a year or so of practice to get good enough to make a living off of freelance concept/illustration work

fucking lmao this just keeps getting better.

how does that work, your parents pay 95% of your monthly needs and you pay the rest with your fantastic freelance career?

you are seriously fucking hurting people by feeding them this bullshit.
>>
Yeah like I sometimes post by accident forgetting that people here have a hard time believing anyone could have a paying job
>>
>>2455137
Well firstly begging for employment from popular artists isn't how you get hired into the industry. You send your portfolio to studios.

And I don't know of any office job that's as fun as creating concept art or illustrations. You can go ahead make spreadsheets/crunch numbers/speak to salesmen in your office but it's nothing like being a professional artist. Have fun living in your parents' house watching anime and masturbating to asian pornstars.

Get #rekt boy, you think you're cool but you're just a fool.

Am I completely crazy for aspiring to self-publish instead of getting hired somewhere?

I just wanna make art books and comics and sell 'em online. I don't care about working for some big name or becoming rich.
>>

>>
>>2455685
It's not wrong to have dreams but you should be aware that self-publishing and freelancing aren't easy. They're grueling work. You'll have to do all your promotion and marketing by yourself which is a full-time job in itself and somehow find time to draw as well.

Getting hired is a lot easier and you'll get steady income that even in the low-rung positions is likely to be higher than what the average freelancer earns plus you get health plans and other benefits, as well as get to work and socialize with other artists and learn from them.

Freelancers, well, they get to be free, and that's something to aspire for. But freedom ain't free, as they say
>>
>>2455685
You can't self-publish without knowing publishers or being rich.

You can create an online following and crowdsource for artbooks though.
>>
>>2455699
>>2455692
> You can create an online following and crowdsource for artbooks though.
That's pretty much the plan.

I'm not super excited about the "getting an online following" part, because I fear that it takes a ton of time and many other things that are not art related, but I have so little interest in doing client work (no matter the client) that I think it would be a mistake to make it my main objective.

I wouldn't turn down a job offer of course.
>>
>>2455597

No, you just suck. The problem with being a concept artist/illustrator isn't that there is no work, it's that 90% of artists don't have the skill necessary.

That's why so many artists turn out to be baristas and baggers. Everyone has this pussy attitude about actually putting in the work, and when they don't get hired, they tell everyone that art doesn't pay.

You failed at having a career in art. You either suck at selling yourself, you suck at drawing, or you just suck at life, but don't pretend it's not entirely your fault.
>>
>>2454373
I know a guy who's shit at art, he tries hard and practices a lot but he's objectively shit by /ic/ standards by a long shot. BUT he is now working as a background painter at a reputable animation studio in Vancouver and also is one of the finalists for concept art in Spectrum. http://sethillustration.tumblr.com

My point being, if you try hard, if you really want something you can make it in art. I'm not going to say his job is what I would enjoy doing but he is making like 30 bucks an hour doing art so you know. Keep working toward what you want and you may get it.
