Posted this just as the old thread was abandoned, so i hope it's ok that i make a new one here.

Making a short comicbook story about a joker victim, i don't know exactly where to take it yet, but i have an idea. Just trying to experiment with the style and look of it for now though.

Pointers and general advice about what you'd want from a story like this would be fantastic, and would you read it based on this one panel?
>>
>>2452450
And the joker im going with is supposed to be a tribute to Mckeans joker, who will be listed as an inspiration and influence when it's done.

joker based stories are really overdone, even in official batman comics. i understand that its a cool idea to work off of, but due to everybody making something relating to the joker is getting old. id recommend an original story

art wise this is good, the composition is wonky. also there is a lot of negative space. seems kind of lazy, id recommend centering the image or making more visible.

one more thing, showing only one eye is intimidating, but again a generic idea.

Op, are you the painter of your attached image? If so, what's your tumblr or gallery, please? If not, could you let me know its source? It's very nice.
>>
>>2452439

Scrap it, study a fuckload of anatomy, then try again at a much later point in time.
>>
>>2452453

The composition is really bad. A good example is the tree on the right; either have it overlap the gnome or place it much more to the right. Before you waste money on paint, leave this. make thumbnails, change things around, pick a comp that is clear and leads the eye around in a beneficial way. If you found one l, use that to redraw this and then break out the paints.
>>
>>2452458
Thanks dude, i actually think i'll follow everything you said. It all makes sense, and that's the first time that has happened to me here.

But negative space is kind of crucial for that panel i think, i have to make the reader feel how alone the person is in the nightmare, that there's only him and the psycho in an empty space. I'll play around with the composition.

I have to pull the face down, and maybe centering him a bit would be better, but i think pulling him even further back into the shadows and making him a bit smaller will strengthen the feel it needs.

Coming up with an original character is going to be a blast, thanks for the advice man.

Nice but I think you could ease on the dark of your darkest dark juuuust a tad. Reserve the pure black as an oomph for details.

>>2452899
Very wonky anatomy. Most of the issues I see are with proportions. Her shoulders are too narrow, arm is too short but there are too many off proportions for me to list them all. I'd recommend doing some 5-10 minute gesture drawings from reference with a strong focus on comparing scales of body parts to one another as well as capturing the weight bearing points of all the limbs and joints.

I still stand by everything I said. I mean look at that ear. Whoever drew this has serious issues with proportion and perspective too. Pro doesn't mean a whole lot, really. I could call myself pro based on some of my freelance gigs. Pro doesn't mean perfect, it just means you get paid to draw and the threshold for that isn't so high that you expect to never see a working artist who's got flaws in their work. Rob Liefeld, for example.

I know as a general rule /ic doesn't really like art which makes explaining the symbolism pointless. Once the the sweet spot is found it really, it really lifts off.

It was a slightly hampered piece, and there was a limit to what I could do with it. I would put my name to it though.

Hope you don't mind a redline/paintover thingy. Proportion-wise your copy's head, hands (esp. her right hand), and both feet are too small. Torso is also a little too squat. Don't use so many brush strokes, it makes the copy too messy, try for simpler, bigger shapes (I'm not really much of painter though, so I am not sure how helpful the left two pictures of mine help...). Colours in your copy also seem a little desaturated.

I know he was probably just copying pictures, but still. University's anatomy books artists are actually well paid, but it's difficult to get a job and it's required to draw actual human organs. I mean you have to copy a real fucking lung and shit like that, the smell is often terrible and it's actually difficult because you have to stylize the organs to fit their role as medical illustrations.

A couple suggestions

I really think you should push him back into the darkness. With the way you have it, he feels like he's in a "conversation zone" though from the description I feel he should be at a "stalker distance" if you catch my drift.

Symmetric composition is meh, if you want to keep the straight on feel, i would maybe have something asymmetric about the character. Maybe you don't see his eyes, but you see his smile? Or maybe it's an interesting light pattern where you're not getting the entire form of the character itself.

You have the skill, it's just trying to push the concept further than what you're showing us.
We should be able to read what the image is conveying with or without the text. Push it further from the cliche and it will definitely make for a MUCH stronger image.

make sure you really examine what your face looks like, it looks like you may have a symbol drawing issue. ie) drawing what you think is there rather than what is actually observed.
i think there are some exercises that deter from symbol drawing in the wiki, google probably has a bunch as well.

because when your focus gets to a certain point that graduation of blue will totally leap out and travel across the work of art.

it would benefit from better line control, not something you can fix in this piece per say but move towards it in the future.
you have a very simplistic thing going on with your values in this piece, if you do shade the mouth just make sure its the same black you have as the rest. i think a mid tone would be funky.

not sure if I'm qualified to critique but I'll try

the shading for the abs make her look chubby(unless that's what you were going for in the first place) which make it look like there's fat hanging around her belly
composition wise I don't know what you're trying to portray so it's a bit confusing since the eyes easily catch my attention but then there's a lower half which also catches my attention so my view is easily divided rather than looking at one whole picture maybe move the focus/framing a little higher since I prefer looking into her eyes and focusing on the contrast with her head and the robe

Everyone else already commented on theshadows, I think the composition needs a little more breakup between the cape and the background unless you wanted it to blend together that muhc. It's almost getting hard to tell it's a cape though, just push it a LITTLE farther.

so the problem with the fingers was that the outline around them wasn't tight enough to the fingers, and they looked longer and the hand looked wider as a result. the underpainting is yellow so it was blending into the fingers and making it look like that was a part of the painting.

small things like that make all the difference cause you guys are right it looked strange before

Is this supposed to be fixed? Why? Why?? Why bother having a model if you're not going to use it to make corrections? Just look. Just look closely that's all anyone is trying to say to you. You don't want to go for photo realism that's fine, but if you bother having a model to use for reference you must care about accuracy or correctness to some degree so just follow through on it ffs.

Consider a different shade for your shadows - the current one doesn't really fit in with the orangeish/yellowish lighting and skin tone, and looks more like well-lit mud on the face than any actual shadow.

On the bright side (no pun intended) I like the definition of the cheek plane with that light, and the highlights that emphasize the shininess/oiliness of the nose.

Doing some redlines for warmup I guess. And I have a tonne of energy right now. If you're still working on this:
-I think your main problem is that your head seems small
-The head seems too far forward if you want it to be straight up. I'm not sure what the story is so I don't know what the pose should be.
-Her left hand is like super wonky (digits bending wrong ways)
-Practice making cleaner lines
>>
>>2454627
why markers?

>>
>>2454069
>>2454370
Pay more attention to shapes, like, look at their shapes. Keep your shapes simple and separate your light/dark shapes before adding detail.
>>2454257
I like the colors. I assume you want more attention drawn up to the face (yeah?), so you could make an obvious gradient from dark at the bottom to light at the top to draw attention up. Just an idea.
>>2454481
Of course. What artist isn't? Work on structure and form.
>>2454492
Work on structure and form.
>>2454626
>>2454627
I would try working slower, and focus more on structure and form. Try thinking about the features fitting into and onto the skull more. Up your contrast too, bring in some darker darks. Definitely work slower though, you don't need to actually finish a whole head at a time.
>>2454708
Start a new portrait study. Your current drawing doesn't really have much to build off of. Next time around spend more time thinking about the skull and it's construction.

Hope this helps someone. I'm fasting today and for some reason I have a lot of extra energy, and time, apparently.

no, you can draw another one better though. I think you need to better your grasp on anatomy a bit, and then go slower with your shading so you can get a better result.

Looks like you're beginning to get the basics down. Your moving up the learning curve. Just keep drawing horses again and again and each time try to just improve one aspect of it and you'll get there.

Those quick studies aren't meant to teach you how to accurately capture faces in a vacuum, they're mostly for training your speed and adding to your visual library. The human face is to complex to be able to learn to draw it well from just doing it fast a lot.
Do sone slower studies and don't call them sine until they look right. Figure out why they look right. Study construction and how faces and heads are made up sui you can understand how all the little pieces fit together. If you can't draw an eye, how can you expect to draw a face with two of them?

Face and neck look both too long.
>>
>>2455119
Colors just use white for highlights, try temperature changes rather than just mixing in flat white; colors reflect light differently and the light that bounces off will be tinted with the surface color. The pose is awkward but I understand where you're going with it and think the bigger problem is the anatomy. This looks done from imagination, but there isn't enough understanding if the human body behind it. Neck is too long, arms are bent and stretched to fit the imagined pose, weight is not distributed along elbows, cup not sitting with weight in hands, fingers incorrect, hair flat rather than drawn as locks on a rounded object, face profile inaccurate (eyes are sunken too far or the bridge if the nose is too thick) ear is incomplete neck is connected to the head incorrectly, clavicle on far side incorrectly placed...use reference and these problems will be greatly reduced.
>>
>>2455119
um... it's a bit stiff. neck a bit long, her right shoulder a bit far forward. her left arm, the shadow is giving it an odd look on the shoulder. pointy fingers and thumb. right arm forward is a very uncomfortable pose.

take a photo of the look yourself and try again.

or , when you actually sit like that, it hurts...

Aside from the size of the ear, which I'm assuming is supposed to be that large because you're drawing an orc or something, the angle that the ear is drawn at seems to suggest that we're looking at it directly. However, in this picture, it should be tilted backwards, flush with the head.

If your intention was to draw an ear that protrudes from the head, then you should have kept the base of the ear flush against the head as normal and instead extended the pinna with a distinct curvature and hollow, rather than the flat human version we see here.

It looks like you used a reference for the ear, but you got a reference taken from a profile shot rather than a 3/4 shot.

You've never seen my art (which receives around 6-9 positive replies every time I post) yet you will say you're better than me. Dude, check those proportions. The lower part of his face is melting, his nose is gigantic due to his deformity, his head doesn't fit on his head, his ear is too small and looks like it's cut in half.

Then we have the askewed features, as the top half of the face is more or less 3/4, and the nose and the mouth should be 3/4 but are more like a profile, and to try to fix this you drew the left nostril more protuberant, and also the left part of the lips, when you should have brought them back more to the middle of the face, and shown more of his cheek.
Also, you drew the right eye like it was a front view. Everything together makes this a bizarre flat drawing of a deformed man.

You will get there, though, you make some beginner mistakes, but your lines are pretty clean for example. Study more from real life and don't try to skip the measuring of the features you lazy fuck. Good luck
