Coloring practice.
Still not even close to natural shade. But trying.

My question is : If I use overlay, multiply, screen... etc, to alter colors more easily, will it slow down my learning speed?
I've heard somewhere that restricting brush opacity to 100% will help understand color more faster. is it true?

your hatching is too random. you seem to just be picking the direction its going and how close together the lines are arbitrarily. girl with gun's torso hatching is a mess, her pants are a mess, the blonde lady's face is crazy looking if you take the form you are describing literally. the guy in front of the gas station his whole body is randomly hatched and the hatching around his feet goes in just about every direction it could.

Wat the fucks a draven? This is literally my first time posting on /ic/... but now that you've brought up the coloring/rending thing. I actually do need to start honing my skills there, pic related was the last thing I rendered since christmas. It's not the best but I have learned a lot more about value and light sources since them so I should start practicing studying/practicing again.

hair needs to be more expressive. the planes of the face are too smoothed out it's really uncanny valley. just looks like photomanipulation, not art.

you want work that is really literal, so when complete beginners look at it they know what to emulate in order to learn how to draw. This just looks like a bunch of effects layered on top of mediocre draftsmanship. it's more ambitious to make work that informs the audience of it's creation, rather than try to aim for complete impenetrability. the latter is always a waste of time because there's always someone that will see right through what you are doing and could replicate it twice as impactful in half the time.

better to learn to draw than learn to fool your audience.

I don't think that's what he meas by pillow shading. I believe he means your shadows aren't really following the planes of the forms and treating them as three dimensional. Instead they are following the edges of your contours.

I would also say that the shadow on his right deltoid (on our left) where it meets the collarbone looks really weird. Instead of being a shadow describing an indent between two muscles, it reads to me more like a pit. Probably due to the hard line and lack of transition of values.

>>2447876
Your shadow placement doesn't really reflect the light source you're indicating, regardless of any additional highlights. Your shading is clinging to the edges of your drawing when it should move across forms to describe the planes. Note in this reference, the shadows are not isolated to the edges of his form. Also, the value range of the limbs vary by their relation to the lightsource.

>Do i make it more 3d?

I don't know what you're asking here. If you're referring to the comment about the deltoid shadow it's an easy fix, don't have the hard edge of the shadow to make it look like it has a sharp edge (and thus a pit) and don't use one of the darkest values to define it to make it look shallower.
>>
>>2447888
how lol anyway thank you
>>
>>2447514
I'm learning color too and I have to say trying to use effects and modes before understanding what colors I was going for made things very difficult. Once I started reading color theory and looking up tutorials and stuff, then I started understanding how to get the colors I need and when it's a good time to use layers or other effects. So personally I would recommend you practice building color and value without relying on effects for a little while first and then use the effects. However if you test them out as you go along with learning just to practice using them and getting used to them that's probably also a good idea.
And remember, don't listen to Brian.

Neck and forehead too long, the anatomy still needs work overall. I like how you shaded the arms to show depth. I think you should have done the same for the leg that's further away, and especially the hair to make the head pop. Pay attention to your background, even if it's just three lines which is perfectly fine, it has to count.

>>
>>2448276
Shadow actually flattens the drawing, if you want the color of the shadow, try dropping it behind him to really pull it forward and imply 3d space.
Shading is okay, but you could definitely get some more value in there
Anatomy is good, except the angle of his left foot doesn't match his knee (look at your foot, can you turn it away from your knee?)
I like the color choice and line work though anon
>>
>>2448271
It's good that you posted an example. From what I see your main problem seems to be that the value range is too low, you're not drawing any of the occlusions and your image doesn't read well because your values for the light and the shadows look the same. Maybe do some Sargent studies, in black and white first. Your proportions seem pretty good but painting asaro heads can be a good start too. And always fill your background with a midtone or your perception for the values will be altered.
>>
>>2448292
Proportions look okay but you're still not thinking in terms of volume, the eyes and lips are very flat. The shadow is too dark to be pleasing, the eyes are not pure white, they should be much closer to the value of the skin than you may think. Drawing Asaro heads would help you a lot too.
>>
>>2448238

I think I'm calling this done so I can move on to the next thing. I tried to soften some of the edges as per anon's suggestion in the previous draw thread but I wonder if it's enough. I have trouble deciding where to make edges lost and soft I think.
>>
>>2448292

Don't use a pure black as your darkest value. Especially when you are working in colour, you want to have your darkest value some saturation. (Usually a lot, although cool darks are possible, most of the time the darkest darks are very saturated.) Otherwise, the other anon gave you some good pointers as well.
>>
>>2448526

Resize your images in the future.
Check the transition of the thumb into the wrist, the first kind of tapers into the other but you drew it too abrupt. Find some ref to fix it. It looks like you didn't construct the fingers, making them look flat. The index finger is not longer than the middle finger and although I get what you're trying to do, it's not drawn convincingly (ie foreshortening and whatnot) and as such it now seems as if the index is longer than the middle finger. The pinkie is a right mess. The nails are too obvious and as such look pasted on, also you did not draw them to follow the form of the finger hence flattening them.

I strongly advise you to focus more on construction next time, find references and grind, grind, grind. Keep it up.

>>
>>2449190
i think it's good that you're doing hand studies, however i feel as though you might be plateauing because you're not really trying anything terribly new in these it's always the same strange, contorted positions, which are cool, but not entirely practical. try drawing the hand holding an object, or in a neutral position, and draw some hands from imagination as well. i would also work on how you construct your hands as well, as right now they look purely observational which doesn't translate entirely well as to imaginative drawing as knowing the underlying construction might.
>>
>>2449219
The grip isn't actually too small, the overall frame of the gun is ridiculously large. I wanted to create a kind of over the top gun that was fuck huge so only the barrel, grip, and ejection port match each other in scale. This thing is made out of a m3 grease gun receiver.

When you completely fucked up and named someone else as 4xis earlier itt you only proved even more that you have no clue what the hell his work even looks like let alone anything constructive to say about it. He even posted his tumblr link and you STILL didn't educate yourself enough to fucking know he colors better than the majority of this board, yourself VERY included, and you think telling him to 'start' coloring is anything meaningful. I'm not quite sure where you're trying to go with your style (political cartoons maybe?) but it really doesn't feel like you've really improved as much as you could have after drawing all these hands; they're really inconsistent in terms of quality, see the top-right (thumb over pinkie) compared to bottom left and the one above it.

Try reading Burne's Drawing Dynamic Hands, maybe not doing all of the construction exercises but gaining a better understand of how to become more consistent.

I gotta say though, the colors look much worse when I post here. Maybe there are some parameters I overlooked.

>>2449718
The composition being divided into three equal thirds is actually a bit repetitive and the perspective isn't accurate but I think you can do something really nice even with those flaws. I'm guessing some warmer tones in the shadows of the foreground would be the next step, try to keep it light and fresh. The brushwork is kinda sloppy, you need some structured elements to contrast with the natural elements, right now pretty much everything looks organic. The values look good.

>>2449689
Looking good anon. The face is a bit asymetrical (but who am I to talk) but doesn't look fucked up. The values are very nice. A bit too much going on in the hair, it could be more simple. I like how you handled the contrast even with a value range that isn't very wide.

Firez's drawings have a lot of problems and I can't stand his attitude sometimes but he's not better. When Firez uses reference for anything other than a person he can be pretty precise while this guy couldn't get that close to accurate with anything. And Firez might draw people with floating features but he still gets way closer to a believable skull and alignment of features than Brian. Brian's heads and faces look one step away from a Picasso abstraction every single time and not in a good way. But artwork aside, I would much rather have Firez's passive aggressive refusal of advice than this asshole's active attempts to ruin every fucking draw thread trying to get people to pay attention to him.
>>
>>2449915
Find an artist to reference the shit out of. Deconstruct figures until you've found a set of shapes / style of rendering a form (sketch wise) that you can use as a crutch to temporarily draw without reference. Make that muscle memory. Really, it just boils down to how much you're willing to practice, and how you practice. Reference, reference, reference.
>>

Head is gigantic, her abdomen is tiny, hand sucks. Shading is crummy and wishy washy and doesn't describe the forms. Study more, be bolder with your mark making and try to have it follow and so describe form

>>2449879

Her face is becoming masculine. Maybe try raising her eyebrows and make her eyes a little bigger. I agree, in your previous the colours were really offputting. THis is somewhat better but I'm still not sold on the textures you're using. Try making them less obvious. She could have a bit more of a waist, right now her torso looks like a tube.

walking back from the coffee shop a german guy stopped me cause he saw my sketchbook. he asked for my business card and to see my drawings. he's apparently a painter and metal sculptor.

i showed him the self portrait i did that was popular on reddit and he said "pretty good" in a very monotone matter of fact way.

so for all the insults and exaggeration about how terrible I am, it's probably safe to say that's an accurate description of my current abilities: pretty good. Not as good as reddit says I am. Not as bad as 4chan says I am.

no you're not pretty good, you're average if not below average with all the years of practice you have. your art has no appeal to it, it's average in every way, every aspect of it. there's nothing that makes someone go "wow this is beautiful" to a trained eye. Lines are average, construction is horrible, and subjects are just plain boring and repetitive. I think you're trying to make a meme out of yourself to compensate for your lack of skill and fall back on that every time you get critisized.

Right now anybody can reach your level by practicing one year, nothing to be proud of and gloating about everywhere. you should stop that attitude and seriously work on your art.

>this delusional.
you cant into drawing from imagination yet.
you are still learning and are nowhere near good.
the man you met was merely plugging his own shit to you.
noob.

and brian, with that reddit post le popular, did you sell the painting....no.
so stfu.

Your camera isn't shit, it's either your lighting, but probably just your drawing. This belongs in the beginner thread.
>>
>>2450150
>Right now anybody can reach your level by practicing one year
>you're a year ahead of everybody
i can live with that

>>2450167
drawing from imagination isn't as important as being able to draw abstractly. and as another guy said on the "sarcastic congrats to brian" thread i didn't plug my shit all over that post unlike what all of you would've done. Cause I'll probably have more top posts this year. So maybe when I can consistently make it to the top post every month then I'll start pluggin my shit. Or at least be recognizable enough that people share my site without me even having to post it.

Desperate isn't a good look. I'm not desperate.

Congrats, you've attempted to bash someone on the internet? And I'm far from a beginner, but also far from a pro. I'll share it when I'm finished with a better camera :)

I know the anatomy is fucked up, but now i'm trying to focus on the rendering and getting used to the digital media
Please tell me how to improve the rendering

good point. not using effects all together would be bad decision. however not relaying too much is important. thanks.

>>2449298
nah. I've heard that kind of criticism countless times. and I know it's valid. because it will be much better if I use more delicate hatches. however I don't want to spend much time doing hatches when drawing is not aimed to look clean.
>>
>>2450183
Okay, sorry dude. But lighting the drawing with a lamp will do wonders with a webcam.
>>
>>2449897
Nice, now do it in ten minutes.

>>2450188
switch to COREL painter digital watercolors since they glaze by default
>>
>>2450181
>being content with only 1 year ahead of begginers after years of "practice"
>being this dense

you're never going to make it.
>>
>>2450221
Thanks for the tip, it'll definitely help in the future. Hell, I'm sure my art would improve if I drew in better lighting

You have the same disease I have, which is "draw everything from imagination because it's cooler and much more fun than boring shit" disease.

So yes, try drawing some boring objects, as it'll firm up your knowledge of how light, shadow, and form in anatomy works.

Studying fur.

Nice highlights on the breastplate quadsman. The crotchplate is turned a bit too far towards us though and isn't following the form of the thighs/pelvis like you'd expect.

>>2449358
Pretty cool, nice core shadows.
>>
>>2450390
if you want it to look like actual fur you have to use smudge
those hard edges aren't very convincing
>>
>>2450221
Finished for now. Could be better, but I'll fuck with it a lot more tomorrow.

It looks like to me that you drew her forehead and the rest of her skull separately, as there's a bit of a hard crease at the hairline. Hair should flow over the skull as it has volume.

In this horrific MSpaint diagram, you'll note that the outside edge of your hair matches the outside edge of the skull, whereas the green lines show that you should be over the edge of the skull.

Just some shitty drawing I whipped up today.
>>
>>2450464
I like it. It's pretty funny.

On the bottom half of the drawing you might have neglected to include the effect of the nose bridge on the far eye. Even if it isn't drawn in, the further eye socket should be covered because of it.

Similarly you might want to draw actual bones for the palm and shorten down that thumb a bit.

obligatory C H I C K E N S C R A T C H comment as well.
