Is art in the video game industry extremely grueling and exhaustive?

My friend is a junior architect and works 60-70 hours a week. Worse or better than that?

Depends entirely on what company you work for, really

The stories you hear about absurd crunching for months on end etc. - they're real, but they don't happen everywhere, so it's impossible to make sweeping statements about the industry as a whole.

High barrier of entry if you're a first world citizen and a lot of work you'll do won't be the kind of stuff you like.
Chances are you will never draw your pic related and your first job might be a few background characters for a Barbie game. You'd need to be good with computers/3d software if not completely fluent.

Still, if you get in, you're working on a something with a story, you have a steady job and if you get enough ranking, you get to work with game designers to fulfill their vision and meet all the no life game programmers.

I can tell you've never worked in the game industry.

One thing that is spot on though is the part about Barbie games. That's what you should expect to realistically happen, working at some no name mobile game studio on soul-crushing free-to-play license games for kids, because that's what most of the game industry really is.
