Pentel GraphGear 1000 Automatic Pencil
I like the weight of it. It has a narrow sleeve so it's easy to see the point or use it accurately against a ruler, the sleeve is also retractable so less prone to breaking if you keep it into your bag. It also has a nice range of lead sizes available.

I mean, if you're just doing sketching, bic isn't a bad choice. 0.7 is a good weight to sketch in, their rubber grips are comfy, and they're dirt cheap so you dont have to worry about losing them.

i own the 0.3 version of this and i found it fealing too heavy for such thin lead, but i have no doubt it would be perfect as a 0.5 or 0.7. i have a couple of rotring tikky graphics which i like more because i prefer a light pencil feel. the 'nib' is pretty much exactly the same as the pentel but isn't retractable. they're pretty cheap too and never had one break on me

Funny story about this pencil.
I love it. So much so that I often forget that I own more than one at any given time. Last night I cleaned out the art caddy I keep my pens in and found three of these. I just bought another one last week.
I don't mind having a handful, I just find it needless because these things aren't exactly cheap.
That being said, the lead rotation doesn't exactly work if you sketch light enough.

Just get a bunch of cheap ones so you can carry them around and don't worry about fucking them up or losing them, happens more often than anyone expects. Good quality is best for home use, I recommend full metal with some weight to it, imho it helps with steady lines.

Personally I don't like working with drawing utensils that have some weight to them, which seems to include the vast majority of non-disposables. Currently I have a few of pic related with different colours of Pentel ENO leads and I dig them quite a bit. They look a bit bulky, but they weigh next to nothing compared to the average mechanical pencil. There's also an inch of eraser on the back end that twists outwards.

Forgot to add that the plastic ones were 0.3 USD each and the metal one was 0.6. USD. They're a real bargain if you want to draw with 2mm leads! (No joke, I compared them with those staedlers from my nearby art store and they are just as good as those over priced German made ones!)
I eventually do want those 0.3mm ones and I'll probably get either sakura or zebra...hmmm...
I am trying to find cheap clutch pencil of 3.15mm. But couldn't really because there's no brand making it that cheap :(. So in the end I had to spend a premium for 2 TK9400! Ordered a 5mm clutch pencil for charcoal and 6-8B leads yesterday and hope they'll come sound and safe.

Brought them online from a lead and clutch pencil manufacturer.
They sell in bulks. 12 cents USD for 50 leads lol (HB and 2B). They also sell 0.5 and 0.7 leads for about the same price.
The 4B, 5B and 6B are three times more expensive though because the demand is lower. Also 5B and 6B are 3.15mm. Because the graphite percentage is lower, they risk in breaking more easily, so making them thicker is the solution.
They are located in China but I use a Taobao agent. The shipping and commission fee is probably the most expensive part. Without those it'll come down to around 10USD.(because China doesn't impose tax on its sellers... or rather, it's always tax included)
If you know someone in China then that's even better. You can save on shipping (which is more than the goods price) and you won't risk damaged goods. The only danger is getting them damaged but mine are all perfect.
Also the proxy seller is quite good with customs so don't worry about it. If you're interested I'll try to write a guide for ya!
Seriously, being a miser has its advantages. You can always get more for less. I never understood people who spent more than a hundred bucks for pencil, paper and eraser. You guys need to learn how to save money on art supplies. Enough with the excuses for being poor! Let's gid gud everyone!

A different seller yes! Online shopping is a magical place. I'm glad I learned Chinese haha. I just type "5.6mm 活动铅笔/笔芯" and the first and second result is pretty much it.
Pic related, my command for 5.6 leads. They are 4yuan (around 0.6 USD) for a box of 6 leads. The 19yuan(2.9 USD) thing you see is a 5.6 clutch pencil. I only ordered yesterday and it takes time for the order to get through. Usually shipping is around 2 weeks if you use Air Mail (EMS is 3-5 days).

Seconding a guide for English speakers. I usually know my shit when it comes to pencils. Pic related is what I dug out of my desk. The Pentel P209 is my favorite of the bunch.
At the top are a couple charcoal pencils I sharpened with an electric sharpener. I haven't had any problems with the sharpener clogging since I started doing this and it forms a perfect cone every time. It's so much faster than a knife for keeping a point on harder charcoal pencils.

Both of these have a tip that wobbles very slightly and that bugs the hell out of me. The Pilot G2 mechanical pencil is one of the few cheap retractable ones I've tried that has a rock solid tip.

I've got a few of these Pentel Pxxx's and the eraser at the back always gets pushed into its metal socket clip. I've got a bag of replacements but they all have the same bollocks issue.

Crimp it with a pair of needle nose pliers. When the eraser gets worn down close to the metal, pull the metal sleeve apart, expose some more, and crimp it again.

I feel like 0.3 is way too small for most sketching. To me, 0.7 is much more comfortable for most stuff. Post some of your sketches pls, I'd like to see how you use it.
I probably own over 50+ mech. pencils and I can tell you it's all more or less the same shit.
Here are my mechanical pencils and clutch pencils. I don't have a 5.6mm lead holder, I still put the lead there because I use the 5.6 leads without it. I think I'll buy one just to have it, the Koh-i-noor lead holders are pretty cheap anyways. They are full metal and really sturdy.

Why not get a woodless pencil in that case? You avoid getting your hands dirty and get thicker and longer lead.

These are awesome. Before I found them I pretty much never bought pencils softer than 4B because they are so fragile. But these are fat so they don't break. 100% recommended.

I use a Pentel Graphgear 500, .5 4H lead. I use it only for sketching shit in because I'm garbage and chickenscratch and the 4H doesn't smear with my disgusting sweaty hands and erases rather cleanly.
