What are some things about character design that you wish tutorials would cover, but either they skim over it or they just don't cover it at all? I'm doing a character design workshop in a few months. Obviously I'm going to cover the basics and my own personal tips and tricks, but I'm worried I might not cover somethings my audience might want to know because it's become second nature to me.

Its not just about 'cute' its about being able to communicate all stereotypes, cute, sexy, fearsome, goofy, etc... And all of that can be done by the overall use of right visual cues.
Its something thats rather well stablished in our brains to recognise those traits right away, yet I dont know of any book that would list them and go more in depth.
>>2436534
I assumed the dude was asking within the context of anime, sorry. You're right though.
>>2436534
That's a shame. Books about the technical aspect of art all center around ways to interpret reality and recreate it from that, and it seems kinda odd that such an approach hasn't been outlined or detailed for design/visual communication and picking up on visual cues beyond horns and halos. Maybe it really is that simple, and all it takes is work after you have the theory.
Think he'll ever release a How to Draw book with his style? Love to capture/mimic his style in almost every way possible.

I'm kind of excited. The animation courses I'm taking in fall, several students have graduated and are now working under Disney. It's not even a special class, just some community college, but everyone says their animation department is legit.

Character design my ass. All you want to do is to draw lolis and edgy weeb-warriors with anime weapons.

No offense meant to anon but I want to use this as an opportunity to ask your opinions on something.
A criticism that I get about my character design on some forums is that he is too bland in appearance, when I want him to look like a regular person rather than a characature or something. Like, I had a prostitute character but in her day clothes she dressed in cute, but slightly skimpy outfits. I based her clothing (both on and off the job) on real prostitutes from a few different documentaries but I was criticized because she wasn't readily recognizable as one. I later wrote in addictions for her but I still felt like that was being forced on someone who was outwardly (Not inwardly) happy, like a lot of women who sell their bodies because if you arent you're probably going to spiral down.
So what about simple character designs like this or what i've described is bad design? Or is it certain types of media that sometimes require such specifications of a character being readily recognizable, even if the story is being portrayed as more realistic?
I'm bothered by it because I got a similar criticism about a new character who again was meant to be based more on a real guy, so his clothing was kind of average because, no offense, but most guys kinda don't dress very different from one another, even within different subcultures you mostly find a t-shirt and jean combo with some kind of cool looking shoe.

Oh shit, never saw your reply, anon.
Just the community college in Austin. Apparently they actually have legit animation courses, which would make since cause there is an animation studio in the city with some really impressive students. Graduating from the art course can land you a job at the studio.
If you happen to be around the area, hope you can look into it. I know another anon here spoke about it as well not long ago. Small world, I guess.
Most of what is posted here are style sheets, redesigns, a few prelim drawings. None of which are "character design" per se. Character design is experimentation until you form a final version that fits whatever your goal is. This "character design inspiration" thread can pretty much be filled with anything because being a character designer means combining elements from everything you've experienced in life. I see a lot of people say they're designing a character but what they're really doing is getting married to an initial idea and never taking it in different directions. I get what OP and others are looking for I just want to tell you to look beyond just style sheets and other people's art for inspiration.
>>2442143
I like this more than I thought I would after realizing who it was.
>>2442147
God I miss this show :(
>>2442391
It's cute but it's not that great. I have a lot of problems with it overall. As a piece of entertainment for kids, it works fine as a basic understanding of emotions, but as a movie i think it's kinda shitty. They could've gotten the point across better as a short film instead of a full length movie, I think stretching it out too long was the biggest problem.
>>2444220
Fucking this exactly. IMO unless you are a professional level artist who gets paid to draw it, or you're a 15 year old girl, you should stop being a weeb. Liking a few good titles is fine but preferring anime to everything is shit. Like, you're the kind of person who'd order a McDouble over a Steak (if it were free).
>>2444715
It's /ic/ which isn't generally anime-only, hence the stylization thread.
It's also 2016, 4chan isn't just about anime anymore and hasn't been for awhile. Moot isn't even here anymore. Believing in anything on this site as one set standard is retarded overall and doesn't change your garbage interests.

depends of the needs. if you're doing design exercises and you draw a prostitute who look like an happy, normal person, it's a failure in design. you have effectively draw a normal person with an explanation of "totally a prostitute guys!" on the side, and you missed the point of the exercise.
if it's for a larger work, like a comics or somethings, that a totally legitimate approach. you will have time to develop the character concept in the work.
but as char design exercise, your goal is too make your character look like as you stated. that the whole point.
>>2449534
?
Are you saying a prostitute isn't a normal person and can not be happy?
>>2448514
Yeah, I mean he is a furry, but also he knows dude. He knows! Even if he is a furry you know. So furries arent all bad I quess, thats why I made the comment, because I either am a furry myself and see people giving them shit, or I am a person that was disgusted by furries to a degree, but then thought that theres more to them and looked past a stereotype.
>>2449587
Shut the fuck up.
>>2447400
Stop whining then. Post more western stuff.
>>2449583
If I draw up a normal woman, do you automatically assume she's a prostitute?
Are you Frank Miller?
>>2449822
No, and no.
Are you going to explain yourself or not?
>>2449862
the point of a char design exercise is to design a character that follow and reflect some specification. if your goal is "a prostitute" and you draw someone that look generic enough that she could also be a vet, a librarian or an accountant, then you failed.
The point of char design is to communicate an idea. if people have to guess, then you failed.
Once again, if the design is for a larger work that can contextualize it, then it's ok. but if it's stand alone, it must communicate clearly.

Bruh...
For "character designs" an awful lot of them aren't that original. And what is a character design without a personality?
When will this reign of Don Bluth/Anime/Cal-Arts come to an end? Folks, you need to broaden your horizons; can't you tell most of these designs are just copies of copies, degenerating each time?
>>2455417
A good designer never thinks about originality but about the purpose and context of the design. Originality is what noobs and amateurs obsess over. At most, it's a byproduct of a good design, never the focus.
>>2455424
hipsters like you really need to learn the difference between illustration and design. Popular, repeating design languages were not created just to spite you, they developed and evolved over time because THEY WORK for their respective industries / products.
CONTEXT is everything when it comes to design, it is impossible to judge a design without understanding its context. Some elitist morons seem to be completely unable to understand such a simple concept, yet they act as if they are above it all and everyone else is just a dumb, dirty pleb. This incredible lack of self-awareness would be hilarious if it wasn't so lost on people like you.
>>2455441
Woah, calm your tits m8. There are no universal rules, and the design styles that are dominant today one day will fall into obscurity, replaced with newer and bolder ideas.
>>2455441
I understand that animation is built on simple forms for ease of animating and I don't despise people being inspired. But a lot of designs I'm seeing here are either too complicated for animation, or are literally just misinterpretations of other styles.
You'll run into sloppy renditions obviously inspired by Disney Afternoon or something horrendous, which in turn is a sloppy rendition of older cartoons.
A brilliant design emphasises a character and their personality. There's no use in focussing on a "character design" if there's no personality or context in the first place.
A design like Daffy Duck is rather generic but through the personality he was given, the believability of his expressions, and expert draughtsmanship of the animators and directors that made him, the idea of a unique design seems pointless.
I wasn't arguing for originality for originality's sake, but a character design that's nothing but a animedonbluth overly detailed mess with no strong elements of design won't make a good character without a good personality to begin with.
>>2455459
The "animation" context is just an example, and also 'cause a lot of designs I see here are from animations.
