next to zero. The more popular something is, the less likely it is for your fanart to be noticed amongst the thousands upon thousands of other pieces of the same subject. The people who will notice it won't give a shit about your art and will just fav it because they like the IP, probably won't even bother checking out the rest of your work.
This is what many people on /ic/ don't seem to understand. Fanart helps you get exposure if you are already a good artist and you already have an audience. You draw fanart of a popular IP, your watchers get it trending with thousands of favs, people who search for art of popular new Disney movie will find your work before all of the other fanart of noname artists.

The absolute best way is to have friends who are popular though. I made a lot of friends back in the day who are quite popular now (I'm still friends with them) and they will reblog/retweet my stuff to give me exposure. Netted me a lot of followers/attention.
If you don't have any friends though, then draw fanart of e-celebs. They will like your picture so lots of people will see it (especially on instagram). Just make sure they're active of course.
Of course none of this really matters if your art is total shit though. You still have to be in some way decent.

That's not true at all. Look at really subpar artists who gain large popularity. more often than not it's because the ideas in their fanart are good even if the art itsself isn't, and sometimes it doesn't even need to be a good idea either.
Want proof? I can dig up my most well known picture on deviantart; a picture I literally drew in two seconds in high school in reaction to a new episode of south park. Because it not only featured a gay theme (It was the tonsil trouble episode) but was fanart. If asked, I'll find the pic and tell you how many followers and views I got from it alone.
Fun fact: That episode came out the day before I got my tonsils taken out. I almost cried on the way tot he hospital. I was a 15 year old girl what do you expect from me?

It's true when new episodes are airing but not really between them. Steven Universe has taken over most of that fanbase.
GravityFalls will probably still get some fanart love for awhile since the series just ended and fans will be hungry for it. If you can think of things that would happen after the series end especially I think you could build a substantial fanbase from it. I might do it just to test this out, honestly.
