Not enough practice. I just read a lot without application. I work a 70 hr work week while taking 18 units. I do what I can, It mostly ends up being stuff done on scraps of paper or in a sketchbook. That'll change in roughly 7 months as I transfer schools. Until then it is what it is I guess. Honestly don't know why I'm on here, I'm wasting the little time I have to thrust at gitting gud.

first, you should really resize your work, no one wants to zoom out endlessly to even see whats going on
secondly, your work doesn't show the artistic aspects needed to be ranked as an adept
I think you lack a solid foundation, as you said, you doodle around when you're bored, and it shows
I don't know what your goals are, but the sticky is a good point to start your journey to git gud

I still love the fake " in 1 year" progress pic that gets posted a lot
fact of the matter is some things you catch onto quickly, others not, that's why it takes that much time to reach mastery. It's kind of like if you paint a still life and manage to get the rendering and construction right but that doesn't mean you can just jump into a figurative illustration and expect to results of similar quality.

This is what a master looks like to me.
I like Dave Rapoza, Wang, Ruan Jia, and the rest that you posted, but they're not at the skill level of, say Jabłoński, Kolesov or Quentin de Warren. For me, that complete understanding of being able to add less and yet achieve more is what mastery means.
A bridge between the old masters and digital painting. I love highly contrasted and fun concept art as much as the next guy, but the fellows you mentioned (as amazing as they may be) are not the highest you can achieve.
