how are we supposed to judge fundamentals of of a drawing you did by comparing angles and did no construction ( top right look at all of her fingers ( all broken)). I'd go into it further but you literally have the perfect version so just overlay it and youll see.

TLDR this is a photocopy, do form and then ask for fundamentals help.

Looking good anon, nice colors, values and brushstrokes! The only thing that jumped at me is the highlights on the leather bag in the top right pic, it's too white and hard, it doesn't look like the material it's supposed to be (like you said, leather is tricky) Look at some ref photo's, that should quickly help.
>>
>>2421469
>>2421488
Dig the bold perspectives! I don't think your construction is as bad as some of the other anon's are claiming, you're on the right track. But try to focus a bit more on line confidence, right now your lines are a bit chicken-scratchy and hard to read. Also, facial construction is something you could benefit practicing.

>>
>>2421501
Looks at the thumbnails you just posted, do you see what your version is lacking? Atmosphere perspective! Put your focus a bit away from shapes and try to focus more on values and hues. Something that helps me is to keep both the ref and your canvas quite small on the screen when you're working in the start. It will automatically shift your focus.

to the guy I said to practice scales in the last thread:
>>2418757

Practicing in charcoal is what I'd recommend actually. Get compressed charcoal in medium and soft hardness (you don't really need hard, it's super brittle and you can basically get the right lights if you're careful. Hard is only useful if you're doing academic drawings and even then you can get away with medium). Just lay in value with thick parallel lines (not because you're pressing hard, but because you're using the side). Start with real light pressure. Then do a perpendicular layer with more pressure if the value doesn't match the scale. do the next layer at 45 degrees. The next two layers at 60 and 30 degrees, etc. until it's dark enough.

I recommend these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F8XBQ2?keywords=prang%20wrapped%20charcoal%20pencil%20medium%20pack%20of%2012&qid=1456769654&ref_=sr_1_fkmr1_1&sr=8-1-fkmr1

or something similar. usually they show up with half the pack broken, but the ones that aren't shattered inside are god-tier charcoal instruments.

The colors get muddy, especially on the skin. I would recommend setting up a palette where you incorporate what I call a "middleman color." Instead of just color sampling from where you blend your midtones and shadows, you incorporate this middleman color to help keep the colors saturated and from becoming too muddy. I would also recommend looking to incorporate cast shadows in your work. It's especially noticeable around the chains. Without cast shadows, they seem very disconnected.

Not a fan of this one. The lines on the figure aren't working together as you usually manage to. His clothing lacks form and generally isn't pleasing to look at. Truthfully, I feel like the whole pose should be re-worked. It's incredibly stiff, especially his right arm.

I'm not one to scream at abstract work as heresy but you really do need work on the fundamentals. Not necessarily drawing from life if you don't want to do that (although its a great way to practice these things), but color, line, composition, etc. will help enormously.
There's a real big difference between good and bad scribbles. Don't think of abstraction as an easy way out. Its harder to do it well IMO.

Construction, placement of features is wrong. For example, in the top one, the mouth is too small, remember that the corner of the mouth should fall where the iris is (or center of the eye is the person is not looking straight ahead)

In the bottom one the eyes are not on the same level and the ear looks off too.

I had problems with the placement of the features too, I think you need to practice the planes of the head a little more, unfortunately in that book loomis gives the subject only a page without really telling you how to aproach it, he just goes "okay dipshit, this is a simple version of the planes, got that? now this is a more advance one. Right, lets move on". Just google for some planes of the head images, study them with the simple version loomis gives, then do the planes on skulls and from there start to incorporate the minor planes. Do it with reference and from imagination, you'll eventually get it

I think I'm coming along decently with more realistic drawings though (more of a sci-fi fantasy horror guy most of the time), for one they're actually kinda starting to look like who they're meant to be. Still a long way to go though.
>>
>>2422297
A tool is a tool. It all depends on how you utilize it. For instance, the burn/dodge tools are generally looked down upon for being used to shade pieces. But they are useful for lightening and darkening areas of an image if applied judiciously.
>>
>>2422297
I actually like this version more to be honest, looks more like an actual painted clay sculpture (if that's what you're going for).
>>
>>2422418
for the smudging, try to protect your hand and your image by keeping a piece of paper in between them. don't drag the paper, if you need to reposition it, lift your hand/paper to do so.

Also, use a kneaded eraser, it can pick up light smudges just through pressure alone without the need for rubbing/friction.

"That shit" is called aliasing. The only way you'll get rid of that is by smoothing it out manually and redrawing the edges after the paste. The problem is you cut it out and residual pixels remain from the original source.

It's not really clear what the viewer should be looking at. I'm guessing this is still a wip, but the orange cliff in the foreground doesn't depict form. Finally, I think the pterodactyl on said cliff is doing a good job killing the composition. Don't take the easy way out; change the angle of its head to point towards the scenery as opposed to having a profile view of it for no reason.

This is the first digital painting I'm making, and I'm doing this on photoshop with a mouse.

I used a photo for anatomy reference (I only changed her right leg position and made her spine I little longer because it was looking off), and another photo for the face (it was basically tracing here, just changed her hair).
The original one here on my photoshop is 5000x5000.

But I just did this tracing and I don't know where I go from here.

Should I start thinking about the base colors and shadows and highlights? I only know how to shade with a pencil, how would I go from shading in photoshop?
What other heads up can you guys give me, thinner lines?
Any other tutorials I can see for digital drawings?

I'm going to buy a tablet later in the year, I want to get serious about this.
>>
>>2422763
I mean, it's be fine if she had an arched back, but there's nothing in the drawing to indicate that, so it loks like we're looking at her straight-on.

If you think that, then you need to go back to the drawing board. Whip out your sketchbook and figure out the areas you're having issues with. While you're at it, try some composition, camera, and lighting thumbnail variants to make sure the direction you're currently heading is the best you can possibly do.

In your solving, you may find you'll have to repaint most of the piece. If that happens, that's fine. You might also find that you only need to make minor tweaks to fix what's bothering you.

There's nothing wrong about doodling. but you should know, that doodling is not about improving actual drawing skills.
doodling comes from your imagination. And as you doesn't have adequate skills, there's nothing gained by doing that.
You have to start anything else but doodling. There's plenty ways to improve such as quick sketch, figure drawing.. etc.
You can find these by reading sticky.

>doodling is not about improving drawing skills

yes, it is. I am a noob and I do nothing else but doodle from imagination exclusively. I am 100% certain that I need to discover and explore my ability to draw before I give a single shit about the rules.
How can I not improve by constantly drawing anything that comes to mind, and trying each time to reach for a higher level of quality? Drawing is an ability, proportions and perspective are subskills of drawing. I.e I can draw a head that fits loomis rules perfectly but looks like shit, and I can draw a head that doesn't fit the rules but is on another level, aesthetically. How do you explain that? How can this entire board be ignorant of the ability to draw as a separate thing from props and perspective?

well like I said, there's nothing wrong about doodling. every artist doodles i believe. And I doodles too. because it's fun after all. But, If someone doodles WITH adequate skills, benefit gained from doodling astronomically increases.

Seeing his drawing skillz, he should not doodling if he want to go somewhere higher. Of course I'm not going to send him a picture of my frowned face whether he doodles or not. but If he ONLY does doodles ( which currently he's doing i suppose ), it's not going to be a good news for him. Like i said above, his skillz will sore up faster if he start practicing some basic things, such as sketching, figure drawing... etc.

I understand that imaginative and free form of art has it's value. But in my opinion, it's value must be combined with clinical skills. The reason people spend time on boring and tedious practice is, not because they are some kind of ego-death ignorant.
>>
>>2423557
There are lots of different ways to measure, but drawing lines on my reference to show distances between elements on the face is how i go about it. Like the distance between her eyebrows, for example.

It also helps if I think of my subject as a series of planes & shapes instead of a face.

I agree with this.
A lot of /ic/ has this One Road mentality about learning to draw while forgetting the most important thing is to just draw. Of course you want to start incorporating rules and teachings as you go along but I've noticed the major thing most people struggle with at first is simply moving the pencil around the paper. So many beginners draw stiffly, can only focus on contours, and either press way too hard into the paper or try to build up these perfect lines by chicken hatching over them a million times. Learning to scribble and be loose goes a long way when it comes to learning to draw through a figure and do construction and gesture. I would always recommend anyone starting out to doodle as much as possible just to get comfortable with the process and then start building their knowledge.

The rendering is actually pretty good, but you polished a turd. I think >>2423737 hits on the big issues.

standing very slightly hunched over in a position that gives off some nice dynamic lines

ill do something interesting with the arms only when I get a concrete hip-leg and chest position

which is proving painfully difficult for me

You should always draw a complete gesture and position all the limbs and head before you start doing lineart.

Okay give me some more info about what she's doing. Is this supposed to be sexy? Is she preparing to fight someone? Is she hunched because she just picked something up or because she's tired? What are we going for here.

the character is from a manga called dungeon meshi

she isnt doing really anything desu
just standing semi un-confident but open position looking towards the viewer

the idea is that im trying to actually make it look like a panel in the manga
90% of the time shes drawn just leaning around so thats what im doing

the manga itself is all about cooking and eating monsters so I though it would be funny to make her rather plump and maybe not entirely happy about it

yeah
thats the full explanation

Really struggling. I am having trouble with the lips, maybe they don't look right because the chin is too long? Maybe the issue is my use of hard/soft brushes? Also not sure how my lighting is, I've been staring at this for too long.

Well, here's my idea for a pose. The most important part of a pose is clarity. Clarity in the gesture, silhouette, and intent. Someone recently told me to keep these keywords in mind: character, place, action, emotion, reason. Get as clear an idea in mind as you can and go from there but don't be afraid to start over it you get stuck. You can also try doing thumbnails and mini gestures to work it out before you draw it. I hope any of that helps.
