You don't like the results? I can definitely see improvement, but if you don't like where you are, ask yourself where you want to be and try to get there. I think that part of the reason why you don't like where you are is because there aren't many finished pieces in here.
Most are studies which aren't bad, but if you want to see where you are as an artist, I think it is important to make a piece and finish it. After studying for so long, I'm sure you can apply what you've learned and get to your goal.

>>
>>2399285

Oh please, it's common sense. First drawing is ground-shit tier, the latter overly detailed masterwork. There's no way in hell someone could improve in 1 hour from shit to mastery. That cat-freak probably was drawn at the age of 12-14 maybe, I did similar shit at that age.
But you can live in your fantasy world, and pretend it's possible.

Loomis or proko do not teach how to render overly realistic interior. So must have been some other resources he used, considering the work he put up is not a copy-paste of entirely different artists.

Why did you guys directly use Matt Kohr's reference? He had other still life ref you could have utilized or better yet you could've (and should've) drawn some still life from life. The problem is IMO that Matt Kohr already made all the decisionns for that piece so it makes it way easier to solve the "puzzle" of what you're trying to draw instead of doing something much more beneficial.
>>2399024
>>2399370
You guys are actually trying unlike a lot of others here.
>>2399414
Pretty good thoug you might want to consider drawing more from imagination if you haven't already. Otherwise you'll be forced to rely on reference. There might be work I don't see though so I could be totally wrong on your work.

OP here, I'm pretty much a complete and total novice with no real inspiration. How do I exemplify progress? Is it purely a technical evaluation? Is studying my focus?

My stagnant technical skill is there to match my nonexistent conceptual ability. What kind of commitments do I have to make to move forward?

Ollie is a magical unicorn. This is like the one punch man thing. He did exercises that normal mortal humans would only receive moderate benefits from, and it caused him to go explode into SSJ4 Goku one day, inexplicably.

Well there's not much to say really. Olly Lawson (https://www.artstation.com/artist/olly) Showed up to /ic/ and nobody paid him any mind I guess. Then he started painting like a lot and boom he got really good. It was nuts.

However the last I spoke to him he said that he had no imagination, and could draw almost nothing straight from his mind. And that was only a couple years ago, really.
>>
>>2400732
could you explain the difference to me? he seems to use less shading but theyre more concise and purposeful. im a newb still.
>>
>>2400890
Oh it is.

But bear in mind this guy has absolutely no problem sticking to the materials. Like the concept of referencing a lot kind of insults someone like me, because I don't want to be chained to needing reference for every fucking little stupid thing.

He has absolutely no qualms about it. I also don't think he knows how to do stylized anatomy in any form. But I mean he could be good at it now. He's probably ascended to godhood for all I know.

He's in our discord chat, he's turned into a machine on how he works. He uses his time wisely and doesn't play video games anymore.

You guys need to get the fuck off of League/CS:GO/etc., there's no reason to play it unless it is paying your livelihood and you will just be stepping stones for people who want to do this for a living. If you're gonna argue "muh vidya games", then enjoy your future at McDonalds.

>>
>>2401925
>no leisure time is allowed if you take art seriously
Anon that's a really harsh regimen you've set for yourself. I still play vidya sometimes, not every week, but usually for relaxation. LoL is shit and I don't like competitive multiplayer games. I usually go for RPGs or more interesting single player games like Souls/Bloodborne, Pathologic, New Vegas, Journey, etc. I feel like games like that are quite artistically nuanced and I've drawn a lot from them in my own work. Find inspiration wherever you can and all that.
>>
>>2401933

i shoulda said competitive games, my bad. single player games are the best to get addicted to.
>>
>>2401934
I don't think there's anything wrong with playing competitively for recreation even when working full time as an artist. Shit gets tiring, sometimes you need to blow off steam and shooting the shit with some friends while shooting shit is a lot of fun. It's just not my thing but I don't really see how spending time playing one genre over another is detrimental to ones work at all.
>>
>>2401936

it's time you could spend on work, what does your work look like with the reference you pull from your games?
>>
>>2401954
Don't be so obsessive. I don't play videogames, but I spend a lot of time doing things that have nothing to do with art, and I think those also help with improving in a way. Tehmehs advice about getting away from art is taken as a meme on /ic/ because you idiots buy into the "you just gotta werk hard and everything's possible"-bullshit that celebrity artists like to push. Hard work's important, but by itself it's pretty fucking meaningless. After you've figured out how to work hard the next step is learning to get away from work every once in a while.
>>
>>2401967
>this is what /ic/ actually believes

tehmeh sucks, and you shouldn't listen to any advice he has given. draw as much as you possibly can like you're out of your fucking mind. you need to do it constantly.

>>
>>2401689
The only problem I really have is looking at the object and not at the canvas at all.

It makes it more exact for me to do chicken scratch. Should I just do it inaccurately until I can do it correctly?

Is chicken scratch really that bad if I can do nice line art on top of it? Or is it a fundamental thing that will destroy your foundation you've built off of once you have to learn how to do straight, nice lines?

What so you're saying he faked his "before" work or used really, really old work and then compared it to more recent work to make it seem like he improved in a shorter period of time? You beat yourself and others down and wear yourself down instead of just fighting through and drawing.

What is weird about that? I was thinking about making such business myself. >http://imgur.com/36wu5Oh

I forgot to reply to two anons in December when I last posted this so I'll do that now:
>Why not make finished works of art rather than just studies? Why hesitate?
Mostly lack of self-confidence. I've been putting off traditional fine-arts stuff solely because I don't feel "good enough" for it. Feeling more capable of doing more... completed work, but I'm still unable to do my own original things or complete that last 10% of polishing.
>Maybe vary up your body types some more, you seem to only short stocky girls
Yup. Gotta work on that. I just like drawing thickness.

Anyway, I'm planning on moving away from painting/values the next few weeks. I've depended too much on it that I've forgotten all my construction. Leaning into my other fundamentals like perspective and hands, as well.

What I love about /ic/ is that you can't criticize anyone who is above you. I mean, sure, you can't tell him what to do, but you can call him out if something goes wrong. I genuinely don't know if it's a mass shilling or what, but that guy seems like a hack and total puppet.

thats because you surround yourself with amateur artists like /ic. As in, you have filled your head with bullshit about "get gud" and "ma tehmeh 1 year progress" bullshit.

If you look at any professional artist it usually takes them around 8 years to get to where they are. Those first 4 years are rough but at the end of the 4th year you will have some pretty nice rendering abilities. After that the next 4 years will be training yourself in creating unique interesting images that test light, value, colors and composition. You will learn how to work more efficiently. Being able to use thumbnails and other studies to help improve the cohesiveness, speed, and overall image quality of your illustrations. You will be getting better at dealing with clients, art directors, and all that fun shit. In that last 8th year you should be able to take on any assignment in a clear and methodical way.

basically at 4 years in you will be an unsure amateur-professional artist. By year 8 you can have a small fanbase and be able to do some solid commercial work.

you are literally retarded. Your definition of a "small fanbase" is probably much different than mine. I'm not talking about a few thousand people. I'm talking in the ~40k-60k on your tumblrs, DA, or whatever.

You can sell prints, have a patreon and all that by 4 years. But you aren't going to get your book published, or work for companies like Wizard or gameloft or whatever.

Artist's like Rapoza took around 8 years to get where he was. Theres more but im tired and don't want to argue semantics with a faggot on /ic/ that wants to split hairs over shit.
>>

These were 4 years ago and done 1 month apart from one another.
I then lost interest and took a break.
I'm now starting to get back into art and feel rusty as fuck.
The reason for the improvement was due to art school. Had a russian teacher who was pretty strict. He had a tendency to make some people cry, especially the girls in our class.
I liked him though, learned a lot from him.

Now I'm just angry with myself since I just dropped it all and have to pick up the slack now.

It lasted 5 months and we drew 6 hours a day with about 2-3 hours of homework.
He would constantly critic you and insult you at the same time, preferably by bringing your mother into it.
He demanded we stayed physical active in the morning before we started, so we would have a thing called morning dance, which was basically just dancing wild for 30 min, which I did like to some extent.

He had a tendency to call the class a bunch of rapist for not getting the forms, poses and construction right.

On a side note, he would also be caring. If you did well, he would come up from behind and say stuff like "baby, that gooood" while massaging your shoulder or fondle your ass. He had wife and kids and he fondled everybody, men and women, didn't matter.

He was quite the character and I like being around him, even worked for him after I was done at the school, by becoming a nude model for his next classes.

Good times

In terms of the workflow, it was mostly long study construction drawings with nude models with a lot of gesture and figure drawing for homework by attending after school croquis classes.
It was based on traditional drawing, so the inspiration was mainly Renaissance artists

Denmark, I was 20 and hadn't really been drawing before, except for the occacional school scribbles most people do.
I sadly don't have any of the work saved, except a few pieces here and there.

I just started to learn animation as well, since I really want to improve everything. Had a guy teach me the basic principle for 5 days. This is as far as I've gotten, did a few exercises the first 3 days and then been working on this the last 2

>>
>>2405856
Yeah, I was there for 5 months, then I went on 2 sideline courses courses with ties to the school for about 10 months.
Then I've just been doing a lot of self improvement not related to art, but now I'm getting back into it and plan on applying to the school.
I don't have the highest of hopes at the moment to get in, but I've gone back to drawing at least 7 hours a day now, so if I don't make it this year, I'll just keep at it and try next one.

Anyway. see you there. I'm probably going back to nude modeling in march, so you might see you there. nohomo

cute, but lower legs non-existent, toes of the feetpaws aren't quite right, neither of the handpaws.

Can we see something not in the standard 3/4, side, or front pose? Dealing with subtle perspective changes of the muzzle are where inexperienced furry artists crumble to pieces.
>>
>>2405615
Neck of the right pic is damn fucked up, and the head doesn't have enough volume.
>>
>>2404232
Too much grayscale. Work some hues into the metal, it'll look more realistic. Especially with those red ribbons right near it, it would definitely be reflecting those, and push the glare from the fire a bit more. The new piece is much more dynamic and has better composition, but you still have work to do on your painting. I do like how those ribbons look though, and how the high-contrast marks on the chest armor and eyes establish a focal point in that area.
>>
>>2407152
They have traditional drawing courses and some vfx courses that doesn't take a portfolio. They still need some drawings and an interview to determine whether or not you will be too far behind the class to take you in, but the standards are not high at all here.

The course I want to get into is the bachelor's degree program.
They have 3 major lines here.
Character Animation (Focus on 2d and 3d animation/Everything that moves)
Computer Graphic Artist (focus on 3d modeling, rigging and design/Everything that's static)
Graphic Storytelling(Focus on storytelling and comics)

They take in 25 people for each line, and they have a total of ~500 people applying each year.
To get in on the bachelor's degree, you need to make a portfolio showing your skills in certain categories, with a total of over 42 images of your best work.

Check out the requirements for the different degrees here
http://www.animwork.dk/en/admissions.asp

>>2407186
Agree, it was my last and best work at the time, but I only had 5 months of drawing experience, so I was still a beginner. The course just gave me some good fundamentals to work from.
