this is the most nothing painting I've seen in quite some time.
I bet you go to an art school, don't you
>>2389084
Don't be a dick. But you may like to mix some colors, especially for the sky.
To show you I am a hypocrite here is my painting (acrilic on cardboard) w/ a mono cramatic sky. I already posted it but I like to support traditional art threads .

pissoff fukboi. The painting has no structure, no point of interest no fucking idea behind it. It can't even be counted as a rendering practice. You're just as bad as him .This fucking hugbox you're creating is not for here so you go eat shit together somewhere else with your edge.

Gouache. How the fuck do I paint grass and foliage?? I'm trying to decide if I should keep working on to or if I should just trash it.

Grass
>quick small strokes with a fine brush
Trees -deciduous
>straight trunk with branches coming off near the top.
>build the branches. Draw a line then a shorter line off that line and so on. Use variations of the pattern.
>then speckled in the leaves. Start with the deepest colour and layer on lighter colours
Evergreen
>paint the trunk, can be crooked
>use smooth strokes fanning out triangularly
>>2389237
The head and torso are nice.
>How the fuck do I paint grass and foliage??
More carefully. Also, try desaturating your colours. They look like they're straight from the tube.

the background is good, i like the coloration of her skin and the hair
but the face... i just
i'm sure the face would be better if it was just blank honestly.
also the hand above her tit gives me vertigo i don't think you have a well developed spatial sense or maybe its just in this particular painting

really like this.
middle and top left are a bit messy, not sure if that's by design or not (though if i have to ask that question i don't think the answer matters)
I still need to redline this perspective, but if anyone has a water tutorial that would be appreciated.
>>2390815
>>2390782
look how cool it is when you blow the fuck out of the colors. i wish i could get a painting to look as vibrant as this but that's the benefit of computer screens :( it's not really possible with traditional media
Current acrylic wip
>>2390839
.......you can do it, you just need to increase contrast and shine light onto your painting IRL. maybe play with texture? stop whining and just go out and try more stuff.
>>2391009
well honestly the real reason i can't get those colors is because i can't afford paints with that quality. a lot of the paints I use are hues, they aren't even true colors, and they are lower-mid tier brands.
hopefully some day :D i think for what I have I get interesting colors but I usually have to use paint straight from the tube.
Something I liked about this painting though color wise was using really opaque paint and mixing semi-transparent or transparent paint into it it really has some interesting effects.
Particularly the big blue and brown patch in the middle and the sky blue/brown patch in the bottom right. So maybe I'll invest in more transparents
acrylic
I sized up this morning's painting from another oil smaller sketch, but I still find I finish after 2 hours max & don't know how to proceed to finish it.

you should experiment with using transparent colors too. all opaque all the time is bad for your art health. you need to get accustomed to the medium and you won't get there without literally mixing different stuff together and seeing what they do.

Scrap the face, start it over. Soften up the abdomen more, I don't know if you're going for that emaciated look, but maybe lightening up a bit will make it more 3-dimensional and less sickly.

Got a pretty good sense of volume and lighting in this... but yeah, the perspective is a lil' off.

>>2394383
sweet!
Where in the world do I even begin? I suck at drawing, i've never painted before in my life. But I bought a ton of acrylic paints/a handfull of brushes and 2 canvases (14x18)
Seeing as I suck at drawing/painting. I'm reluctant to really start because I don't exactly want to waste the paint until I fully understand color theory. But I guess that comes with use.
>>2394383
The face on the left looks off, but all around this is really nice!
>>2394455

it'll be shit
post it here and we can help you understand why its shit
then paint over it or get a new canvas and try again

>>2394480
The whole color theory bit comes with just doing it, right? the whole saturation/hue/etc parts.
>>2394455
>>2394480
>>2394504
Actually, it can be really benenficial to learn colour theory by doing excercises.
Try mixing and painting an accurate colour wheel. Match the values of the colours with greys. Beyond this, there are many 'grid' and 'worksheet' type excercises that get you to mix hundreds of tints, shades, split complementaries, etc, and involve lots of matching of values and even step gradations. I did about 7 of these things over a couple months, requiring hundreds of mixes, and learned 10x as much as I would have just painting from observation and winging it. It's like practicing scales for piano.
Something from a few Werks ago. I already posted it in the draw thread before but wth. Just grinded construction for the last weeks so i dont have anything newer

I tried to paint cookies with gouache
>>2406852
Not bad for a first pass!
I'd say just focus in on and simplify the values a little more for strong form, and mind the subtle color temperature changes.
The texture of an object (cookie) will likely come from edge control and/or highlight behavior.
>>2406834
chun, do you think your paintings could be achieved without you knowing fundamentals? why?
>>2406855
Thanks for the advice!
It's good to know that I'm not completely lost
>>2406889
I want to paint this way. Nothing to do with fundamentals if you insist on realism.
>>2406852
I don't pull punches.
I thought they were rocks until you said they were cookies. They look a lot like cookies in the thumbnail, and I can totally see cookies when I keep that in mind, but otherwise I kinda think 'boulders, rocks'. So figure out why and fix that. 5.5-6.5/10, very good job for a first try.
Any tips for gouache tutorials/videos?
I made a thread a week or two back asking about pastels (many thanks to all who responded), and the materials I ended up going with arrived this week!
Painted this shit on a piece of copy paper treated with Colourfix Primer, hence the brush lines. Used copy paper because I just wanted to see if it would work, which surprisingly it sorta does if you're just fucking around and don't want something particularly presentable (could also just sand the brush lines down or use a roller or something I assume).
But this primer shit's really fucking great on decent paper, no brush lines at all. I'm using it to recycle used up watercolour paper scraps and fucking weeping for all the ones I've just thrown out over the years.
Anyway, this is literally the first thing I've ever painted with pastels, so probably not much to say or be said yet.
A thousand apologies for muh disembodied eye cliche, it's just such an easy quickie.
Watercolour
The skulls still a work in progress but I'm fairly happy with the background, not how I imagined it at first but a good learning experience as a whole
>>2407004
i see, but your learned things like comosition and colo theory together with other stuff that you use on realism, like matisse, hes learned a little of classical art so he could simplify it and distort it in a way

i like this a lot
Been working on this painting. Forgot to paint a background before I painted the cat itself and now I have no idea what the fuck I'm gonna do.
The yellow/goldish thingies on it's back were supposed to be eyes. Been debating on whether or not I should paint the pupils, kinda like it like that though
An old thing I did in high school. I usually prefer oils when do it at home...of course, I'm too goddamn lazy to paint more than a few days out of the year.

>>2409347

>>2409440
It's a rather liberal master study of Sargent's Beatrice Townsend
>>2409328
It looks good, but don't be scared to really push those darker values, it looks a bit flat at the moment. Other than that there are details that are a bit weird. Her chin looks crooked, and it's hard to tell what her left hand is doing. The black around it almost makes it look like she's holding a piece of her dress, the value shift is subtler in the original even though it's generally darker.

>>2413475
I really like this. I fly alot so this painting makes me feel very cozy. And the fact that the canvas (board?) is in the shape of an airplane window is probably the best touch. There's a lot to be technically nitpicky about, particularly about how your colors aren't desaturated enough as they recede into the distance, and your gamut is kind of lacking overall, but as a concept I really like it, keep going. Here's something I'm working on
WIP 5'x6' oil on canvas
WIP 5'x6' oil on canvas
>>2415408

Better than 95% of ic.
Her face looks a tad skewed somehow. Her left cheek is caving in a bit, or perhaps the features are a bit big, or perhaps the mouth and nose are too far below the eyes/too close to chin.
The line describing crotch and legs could be more defined, but I understand this is a wip and you probably know that.
Her left lower leg and right hand are painted really nicely. The foreshortening on the right forearm could be a bit more convincing, but I don't know exactly how you'd fix that.
The setting is nicely painted, but the placement of the dark bird is not great: obscuring the shoe, and he's painted pretty clumsily.
I assume the next thing you'll be working on is the drapery, because it looks a little gross: especially where it meets the flesh at the torso and right leg.

I appreciate the time you spent really looking at it. Maybe you shouldn't have written that condescending comment, then I wouldn't have criticized your art, which, by the way, is my honest opinion.
You wanted me to do some academic studies, and I did just that. I have another painting waiting to be dried before I can photograph it. You obviously aren't happy with it.
This is a jealous and hypocritical place. When I do beautiful Asian ladies, you want me to do more fundamentals. When I do fundamentals, you say that's not a real painting. What do you want?
I am not trying to claim to be the greatest artist ever. But definitely I will rebut any insults and condescension on me or my art.
>>2422028
>I am not trying to claim to be the greatest artist ever
if thats not your goal you're either lying or retarded. why wouldn't you want to be the greatest artist ever?
>>2422028
You are wrong on two levels - claiming to be greatest and trying to be greatest are two separate things,
and I respect the giants that came before me. I am going to stand among them, but I am not going to try or claim to be the greatest artist ever. That's a foolish goal.
You walk into MOMA and see the painting by Picasso of the women of Avignon, and you can't help but wonder how amazing and brilliant he was - his painting has massive presence and figures and curtains fill up the whole painting with such vigor and finesse. Same for van Gogh - his instinct in colors were impeccable. He produced about one painting a day.
And also Frank Auerbach.. when he wrestles with massive paint on the canvas, he earns my utmost respect.
>>2422034

Untitled
first time oil painting
it was horrible
>>2430122
Why don't you actually paint something faggot?
>>2430122
Too derivative of Pollock. No matter what you bring to the table, drip paintings will always be seen as copies of Pollock's stuff. You need to find your own gimmick.
Unoriginal abstract painting, but they're fun so
>>2421872
mo progress
>>2426937
The word I'm keeping in mind right now and trying to chase is chiaroscuro. There's a lot of stuff you'd probably like if you searched that. Also check out Michael Borremans and Victor Man.
Thanks a lot man!
>>2427063
Almost ready to leave it.
>>2429733
Wow, well you got your values down. That's what I'm struggling with, I've always got snowed in on details and either ignored values completely or just fucked them up in the progress.
>>2421573 I like the ink. It ties it together nicely.
>>2427049
I really wanna see this finished.
>>2427201
Thanks! I think it looks flatter now, not sure how much is on me and how much is just the paint drying.
bit off more than i could chew with this one but it was a worthwhile experiment
Just learning with watercolor. Just a wip.
washed out pic. second time working with oils.
>>2406834
garbage
>>2430122
garbage
>>2405603
what a waste of paint
>>2431048
Another wip. I've spent way too much time on it but I just can't stop
>>2405603
not fantastic but I like it. It looks fresh.
emm, guys, what else do I need, besides an easel, to get started? what different types of paint there are? I wanna paint some bauhaus but am completely new to using anything beyond a pencil or charcoal.
>>2436392
I would probably start off with acrylics. And pick up a copy of Color by Betty Edwards to learn colour mixing and painting basics. In fact, here's a pdf: https://134fundamentals.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/color-by-betty-edwards.pdf
There you'll also find information about all the tools and paints you'll need. Study it well and you'll be able to paint Bauhaus to your hearts content.
>>2436459
cool, thanks! I'll give it a look.
some shitty paintings (more like studies)
>>2437644
and another
>>2431048
Bit slow to post it here, finished it now.
>>2437697
It took me a but too long to find the dog in the foreground, so you could bump up the values on it. Also: the blue in the water towards the background is very saturated for being in the background.
>>2434428
I love this
Still rough but I'm not sure if I'll actually bother finishing it.
>>2390717
Good use of rthyme.
>>2438322
stoooooooooooooop
>>2438322
>>2438138
Holy shit this is better than comedy.
>>2438322
I'd make the background a bit more subtle. Or less messy in other words, but i do like most of the colors you've used in this one.
also, changing the color of your signature was a good move. it was kinda distracting
>>2438322
Pretty cool. Have you tried any where the black outline is more subdued? Does that take away or add to it?
>>2415408
the most interesting painting in this thread
keep it up

I mean this in the least offensive way as possible: You really suck. You're completely missing the mark in all categories. My best advice would be to stop and seriously consider what you're doing. There is nothing compelling or interesting or pleasing to look at in these works.
>>2438370
Looks good, but rough as you said, keep at it!
Im assuming the odd colours are left there from previous layers? Try glazing once you've finished it up a bit, great for making things uniform, if you didn't know that already
>>2426116
apply a couple layers of white acrylic before starting if you want to get rid of the canvas texture and still get a flat painting.
or just use more paint
>>2440072
i think you may have ever so slightly improved. keep going in this direction and eventually youll have actual anatomy.
>>2438141
thanks dude!
I've done some more work on the chest, currently tweaking some bits and I'll finish the grass, then I'll add the whiskers and call it done.
Alright so this is actually my first time posting my own work here. I've lurked on and off for many years, but I basically stopped doing art years ago. Now I have my motivation back, with a vengeance. My previous work has been utter shit, but I've never had any constructive criticism, just asspats leaving me a crippled dA-tier wreck.
I knew I was bad, but I wouldn't have been able to handle criticism if I got it.
I have successfully deflated my ego, and I'm ready to have it laid on me.
I got really carried away with this rabbit. It's my second painting since my new start and I expected it to be as shit as my old work or worse, so I painted it on fucking Canson Figueras paper.
I couldn't bring myself to risk ruining a canvas. I can tell you it's a huge improvement from my previous work, and I attribute that to not trusting my eyes, instinct or "talent", realising the importance of values, and just constantly checking my reference.
I will be posting my upcoming work and I expect you to be brutally honest, I crave it.
>>2440106
I like it

>>2440115
Well, this is not the harsh criticism I expected.
>>2440106
This is really, really good mate. Not even lying. Is it gouache?
>>2440152
It's oil paint actually. Don't think I've ever used gouache. I've mostly used acrylics in the past and never truly enjoyed it. Oils just get my creative juices flowing like nothing else. The smell alone is intoxicating.
>>2440159
Yeah, it reminds me of all the good things we will never have.
>>2440159
Credit where it's due, anon.
>>2440156
I feel the same as you about acrylics. I recently started to attend a course focused on the medium and the teacher assured me that nowadays oils and acrylics are on par with one another when it comes to pigments and such. I'm still not really convinced, the medium just feels really clumsy to me and I just can't seem to get all the nice subtleties I can get with oils. I do want to crack the code to acrylics though, they're a lot more practical opposed to oils. Gouache is nice, I think I consider them a happy middle between acrylics and oil? Like, all the convenience of acrylics with the nice subtleties of oils.
>>2406834
Burn and start over, but this time actually paint something.
Wip, working the gradient and studying Mikey.

The eyes are fucked up, the mouth is off (esp in the coloration)...
Yeah that's all I got
Started painting last year September.

Easels can be annoyingly flimsy.

Acrylic and Ink
A serie I am working on
i did a self portrait and it was popular on another website so tell me how terrible it actually is
>>2446073
a good pose to hide your hands since i'm assuming you can't paint hands. anatomy in general seems a bit off (figure's left arm is too long i think, shoulders are both iffy for 2 examples)
i like the way you denoted fabric, shadows are inconsistent tho
palette perspective is a little wonky but i can forgive that. background perspective however looks radically off, and that is a big nono.
the face looks pretty well done.
I hope "another website" isn't reddit because someone will inevitably make fun of you for it.
>>2446096

The missing child posters just seem ridiculously excessive. Imo it would've been far more impacting with just the crying women.

Your so-called "insult" was valid critique and I changed the eye and nose, as well as the ears. You'll have to try harder than that.
Still a bit to go but getting there.

appears so! time for another one i suppose
