How can I improve this (other than making it darker, I only had a basic 2h-6b graphite set)? What did I do wrong/right?

proportions nad measurements are off. if you want to practice shading/rendering, try tracing. Nothing wrong with that if you're using it as a tool to learn.

Why did you render this if the drawing was off? Couldn't you see that the drawing wasn't right? Anyway good job I guess if you just want to be a human photocopier. Get a mirror and draw yourself if you want to learn.
