I like it OP, but it took me awhile to figure out it was popping out of water. Maybe it looks a bit too much like smoke?

Warm up the submerged bits. Submerged things still don't have a darker value (usually) than things above surface.

You might consider clearly identify a light source to make it easier to read.

If it were me, I would of changed the entire angle. So you could see more of the face of the octopus popping out of the water. It's a pretty boring angle in my opinion.
