I can somewhat see where you are coming from, it's not his best, but what I think he does extremely well is making a painting look very realistic which such simplistic looking brush strokes.

shows a good visual library, but I'm not a fan of this video. It's a lot like the " just draw the rest of the fucking owl" image in a sense. He seems to act like he never did the left in his process of growing, or that the left is never an early step to full rendering on the right.
