something that stops me wanting to draw is thinking it has to

something that stops me wanting to draw is thinking it has to be good, when im not good

should i just throw away everything i sketch after i've done it? i feel like this could remove some performance anxiety, but i wanna know if thats somehow gonna hurt my progression (like if u need to look back and crit, or see progression or something)

opinions?

should clarify im doing exercises and i just want to improve, not looking to make any great pieces

Think of your drawings like frosting inside a frosting squeeze bag. The good drawings are inside you, but they're in the back of the bag. You have to squeeze out 100-200 shitty ones before the good ones start coming out. Be proud that you're getting the shitty ones out of the way first.

this is a bizarre analogy, but i get it. you're weird and i like you

(so i should keep these drawings and revel in their awfulness?)

I wouldn't revel in them, but at least fill up a book or two with them so you can see the thickness of the book and know they're in there. Years later it will be interesting to go through them and look at the progress, but now it's more important that you know how many you've made, not specifically how they are

filling a sketchbook helps no matter how bad it is

thanks, this is a good way to think about it

Hang on to your drawings, but what I did to ditch the anxiety was get printing paper and throw it in a binder. With a sketchbook I never wanted to 'soil' it by ruining a page, but when you have a binder with printer paper it doesn't matter at all. If you royally fuck a page you can just toss it, but make sure you keep some that are representative of your skill level at the time. It's easy to lose sight of progress if you don't regularly compare to your old work, and I think you'll find as long as you practice regularly you will see noticable improvement after a few months when you compare, even if you don't notice it as you draw.
