you're missing the tilt of the shoulders, mostly! there's a fairly clear C curve on her body, but you've got her goin straight up and down, which is why she looks petrified. she's also leaning back a bit, which you didn't quite get. something to look into: if you draw a line from her raised shoulder down to her pelvis, the shoulder, breast and hip all line up fairly well. for them to line up on your drawing, the line would look more like a / ! i exaggerated the tilt of the shoulders and hips in my drawing, but a good general way to start out most figure drawings is by defining the relationship between those two axis.

also, i don't see a whole lot of under drawing on your study! though it could just be covered up by the tone. it's important to draw through the forms when you're just starting out to get a good feel for how the human body is actually made and how each part fits together-- don't just copy the contours!
>>
>>2322048
I like this
>>
>>2322050
Not the anon you're critiquing, but this has such great weight and gesture. I have problems doing non-gestural studies of the human body because I'm unsure of pushing shapes since it'll won't be a 1:1 copy of the contours. Is it better to go for fluidity/gesture instead of accuracy, even for very realistic and rendered out pieces?
>>
>>2322069
not the anon you question, but here is my take on it:

not copy counter and try to make a 1 to 1 copy, but
1) look at what each part of the body is doing in relation to the others, and
2) try to keep simple proportions (this is twice bigger than this, this is about 405 smaller than this)

in conclusion, look at each part of the body and think like a 5 year old

Thanks for the reply. The chicken scratch and rushing are definitely true, but I'm honestly surprised to hear that the construction is poor or non-existent. I went through the whole gesture/chest and pelvis boxes etc. What signs should I be looking for to see if I've made a mistake in my construction?
>>
>>2322267
You will realize this soon, from now on I suggest that you take a break from studying photos and start drawing some basic shapes, actually, it will be good if you work on your perspective too.
If you draw basic shapes and work on your perspective, usually you can practice both together.
Baby steps will lead where you're aiming for so no need to rush anything

Here: drawabox.com/lesson/1

Follow whatever this website is telling you, do these exercises and you will improve
Good luck

I think it's obviously different, the gradual change makes it seem a lot more similar then it is. now why the hell would I trace a freaking study when i'm trying to learn ? I already posted this on the old study thread in which the ref was the op pic, so a lot of people already saw this. I also post my blog pretty frequently on the tumblr threads, so I'm not "implying" that I just did it.

>had it unfinished, picked it back up, STILL bores me to death, can't finish it.
a lot of people responded to my last post, so I didnd' feel the need to explain that it's from an other thread from 3monhs ago yada yada. I'm implying anything anywhere.

I'm flattered I guess ?

that's disgusting mayne, read the sticky and try to observe the original before you even think about picking up your pen

as a warm up you could just draw the basic shape/contour, without any details, like the eyes or the beard
that way you can see if you're at least able to reproduce the basic model

try to feel the forms more. The breasts are laying on a curved surface, but your study feels pretty flat. Try to see/feel the hidden lines (the gentle curve between the nips, the long flow of energy from top to bottom, the stretch backwards in the hips, etc). Good stuff, keep pushing m8

I really can't describe it very well as I'm inexperience and some people actually told me the method was completely wrong. Started with lines which are my forte so that was easy, then literally just painted the white/grayish base and painted/blended (on manga studio 5) the darker parts, one by one, I put in almost an hour just for the right upper side I remember, could not move on until I had it perfectly like I wanted it.

No it's the proportion of the entire face

>>2324431
Stylistically it's cool. Mostly the issue is that her features are painted smaller and fill up less of her face than in the picture. The brows are closer together in the picture they are also lower and closer to the lid. The nose is painted smaller in width in the bridge and in the sides of the nostril and a little higher than it should be compared to the mouth. The mouth is painted too small in overall width. The teeth are over emphasized in height which dwarfs the fullness of her lips. The lips are also painted the same width when she has a fuller bottom lip. For size reference, the gap in which you see her teeth is almost equal to the width in the center of her bottom lip.

I think the link on the sticky says that it's "drawing what you think something looks like, instead of what it actually looks like"

I don't really completely understand that explanation though, I'd appreciate it if someone could spoonfeed me like the retard I am and explain it more in depth.
>>
>>2325213
The brain stores information as quick symbols to compress information for easy storage. So, instead of remembering every detail of the object/person, you remember a "symbol" of it. A stick figure is a good example of a symbol of a human being.

When you try and draw though, the brain tries to make your subject into a symbol by simplifying it when you draw, an calls upon memories and previously made symbols in your brain to serve as a reference for the subject. This conflicts with what you actually percieve and see by focusing on surface detail and simplification of the overall structure of what it is you are drawing. This is obviously unlearned through discipline, practice and observation.

Therefore, symbol drawing is a drawing not based in technical study or what you see, but a simplification and distortion of the information you process. Tl:Dr a shitty drawing

Aight what the other anon is getting essentially is that you're not drawing with form - you're drawing shapes, in the 2D plane rather then the 3D.

Your construction is entirely 2D, not 3D, that's why your construction is deemed poor. Without an understanding of the 3D construction, you lack the fundamentals to create a drawing that is supposed to be in a 3D space. So yeah, go use drawabox and finish the anatomy lessons .

work on your observation skills. Look for the relationship and angles between things (bottom of the breasts, angle of her left leg, and the head tilt, important ones to get down). Practice gestures and do some long figure studies where you really focus on observing and capturing the angles.

Watch your proportions. Head is too small, neck too short, legs are oversized, etc. Mark your landmarks and measure distances between them using whatever distance unit on the figure is convenient (head height, shoulder width, etc - whatever works).

Pay attention to the C bend of the torso, and notice how the back leg follows that rhythm. Exaggerate the gesture.
>>
>>2330798
First off, your figure is leaning. Do a quick rotation to get that sorted out first.

Your figure is a lot stiffer than the ref. Notice the counterbalance between the shoulder tilt and the pelvis tilt. You should also mind the C bend of the torso - in the ref we're seeing the underside of the ribcage and the top of the pelvis. Carry the gesture of the torso and extend it out for the back leg, which follows the same.

For your starting values, reduce everything down into two distinct values and nothing more: one for the lights and one for the shadows. There's a good amount of variation within each, but you want the divide between light and shadow as clear as possible early on.

For all of your starting shapes (both the figure's form and the shadow mapping) try to use straight line segments and no curves. Easier to judge spatial relationships that way. Once everything's good, you can go back and soften sharp corners into curves where needed.
>>
>>2330830
Proportions are a little off, as is the gesture of the neck. I would have opted to match the background with the ref so that it's easier to judge your values. You've gone too dark in some places, especially the eyes. Feels a little symbolic in that you are no longer accurately depicting the forms there. In that same line of thought you've also made the whites of the eyes too bright. Squint at the ref and try to use the actual values that are there instead of altering them

I'll agree with the rest, but what's wrong with bold outlines?
>>
>>2331022
Bold outlines aren't inherently bad, but fairly worthless for a study. They're just for stylistic purposes, right? Just to make something look good. If you're using them in a study, you're probably just trying to cover up other faults.

yours kinda looks like she's leaning back, you missed some relationships, like the boobs on yours are at an angle that should be like the blue line not the red, and if you look at the relationship from the rib cage to the hip yours goes at an angle back when it should be pretty much straight

How do you go about doing these? Do you start out with a sketch blocking out the planes, or do you start with more of a silhouette kind of base and then block in from darkest moving into lighter and lighter or what? I'm shit at color so doing studies like these seem like an interesting challenge to step out of my current comfort zone.

i fill in the background as one colour, then do a rough sketch as an attempt to keep proportions in check, then i paint underneath the sketch. i start with the two largest colour/value groups, then just refine and refine. it's fun, i'm not trying to go for anything fancy or overly rendered, i'm just trying to build my colour/mood library. because they're so quick, if it sucks you don't feel bad about throwing it out or starting over, too.

You're not achieving the right values with hatching. Look at the ref again, notice that there's a wide range of values that you're not representing at all, so your drawing lacks the contrast that gives the ref so much personality.
