>>
>>2295868
Don't be ashamed anon. You can find something to learn from or be inspired by in any artist's work, even if they're not the best or most amazing by most standards. The important thing is that _you_ get something useful out of it.
>>
>>2295874
>I love looking at these threads and trying to guess whose who
Imma guess you're the guy who does those super loose line sketches. The lines are pixelated like done in MSPaint or something and aoften sorta one line as if you don't lift the stylus off the tablet while drawing at all. You do abstract shape spaceships and characters that are sorta Zedig-ish but sometimes have super weird proportions like are top heavy or whatever.
>>
>>2295401
Serious question: How do you guys narrow it down to like 5 or 10 people/things? I feel like I would have trouble narrowing it down to even <50 because I take inspiration from many things. Do you simply only look at a small handful of stuff? Do you just omit tons of things?

>They all look the same

Indeed.
>>
>>2295992
influence is not the same as inspiration. Many people who post these charts make this mistake. Look at your work and be honest about what artists are visually reflected in it.

Like, if you are inspired by Bouguereau, but your work looks nothing like his, neither your compositions, nor subject matters nor rendering technique, then he might be an inspiration, an artist you enjoy looking at, but your own art is not influenced by him.
>>
>>2296124
While you have a point, these charts are really more useful as an aspiration map. It can definitely be beneficial to analyze yourself and how you've developed by trying to pinpoint how you got to where you are, but what're you gonna do with that information? You don't want to stay where you are, and as soon as you move forward that information becomes less and less important because it's a smaller and smaller portion of your journey. That's like looking at your parents and going "yup, that's why my nose is shaped that way". A more useful way might be realizing your parents have a problem with addiction, therefore you stay away from addictive substances - basically, analyzing your development to avoid problems you've had in the past. Ultimately you want something to help you move forward, so choosing artists you want to take influence from gives you a goal to work towards and makes the chart relevant for longer.

I'm not even ready to stylize yet, so I see these more as "goals". Inspiration of course, consists of an entirely different list.
>>
>>2298083
My tastes are pretty similar to yours, but I'm a bit lost on how to practice. Am I supposed to draw realistically until I've internalized the fundamentals?
>>
>>2298108
>Am I supposed to draw realistically until I've internalized the fundamentals?
Yes. When it comes to the color process I've got nothing. If you want to be able to draw that shit though, yes you need to learn how to draw realistically first.
>>
>>2298108
OP here, I think it's okay to have fun stylizing once in a while to keep your sanity, but if you really want to improve it's all about grinding the fundamentals.

After that it's just figuring out style, pallets and rendering (to the best of my knowledge).

Lost on the actual creative/design part though, but I think that eventually comes with a ton of visual library and experimentation.
>>
>>2298121
You will never get good at stylization just by grinding fundamentals. Every single artist who is good at stylization got to that level by working on fundamentals and stylization side by side.

Look at life drawings by Disney animators for example. They are structurally sound and properly constructed, but there's always a conscious effort to push shape design, to simplify and exaggerate, to understand the line of action etc. Never just to "grind" fundamentals and copy life.

Getting good at stylization requires conscious effort. It's not something you get as a freebie for grinding fundamentals.
>>
>>2298083

pls kill yourself.
>>
>>2298227
That's only true once you get your fundamentals down well. If you're still at the point where your draftsmanship is shaky, your grasp on perspective & turning objects in space is limited, and you can't even draw something so it actually creates the illusion of being solid and having form and depth, trying to push for style won't help you much, it'll only ingrain shortcuts that will turn into gaps in your knowledge. All those professional artists you mentioned spent years learning to draw real people first. That's why CalArts asks for an extensive life drawing portfolio to get in. The Manga academy in Japan also has its students doing tons of life drawing. You get the foundation down first so you don't get lost and sloppy when you start looking to distort the familiar.

This comment right here is the real bait.
>>
>>2304800
What bother you exactly? It's the fact it's "unfinished"? It's the texture, the shading? I feel like his sketches have a lot more personality than his finished pieces. But it's just my opinion.
>>
>>2304808
I'm not that other anon but I really dislike his pencils and his linework for his digital comic stuff. I guess it's missing all the things that his paintings excel at--good lighting, texture, and rendering. Quite frankly these pencil sketches are pretty bad. They have wonky structure, are incredibly stiff, have bad value control, have hatching that is way too repetitive etc. Their entire aesthetic is just very unappealing to me and it's pretty clear he is not as comfortable with drawing as he is with digital painting.

Just compare his sketches with those of illustrators who are actually good with pencils and it will become more obvious how his stuff is lacking (I'll name some old CAers since they have the same background as Dave): Marko, Wes, DanielC, Achadobu, Rusty, Whit, Pascenko, Algen, Jana, Lukias, etc. Now add in a ton of old masters and comic artists and old illustrators and you have literally hundreds of choices who are MUCH better than Dave at drawing. So I find it weird that someone would choose Dave as an inspiration over those other people.

You mean Steve Lichman? I really don't like what he's doing with Steve Lichman.

I think I understand what you mean, and I googled all the artists you named (I'm already a fan of wesley burt and marko). They are all pretty cool, and probably more skilled but I still prefer Dave Rapoza.

I believe it's linked with the fact he draw stuff I like. For example, if I'm not mistaken (and you can correct me if I am), most or all of the artists you listed draw mostly rpg like pictures, right? Men in armor, brutes, women in sci fi armors, creatures, mech(s) etc. I don't care about this setting/theme, about this "concept art"ish thing. Meanwhile Dave draw comic books characters, animu characters and more in a quality (for me) it's rare to find. I really like it.

You probably know Travis Charest right? After Dave, he's one of my favorites. But I find him kinda generic. Awesome, but generic.
>>
>>2304871
Oh, I named those artists specifically because they do similar stuff to Dave. When I think of him I think of fantasy stuff with muscled men and whatnot.

So it's not Dave you like, it's his subject matter? Still it doesn't really make sense to me because things like comics and animation have insanely good artists behind it. I would look to the source rather than fanart.
>>
>>2304876
>So it's not Dave you like, it's his subject matter?
Exactly.

>Still it doesn't really make sense to me because things like comics and animation have insanely good artists behind it. I would look to the source rather than fanart.
Hm, I do, actually. I believe I know plenty of comic book artists. From the top of my head, artists I know that are better than Dave: Esad Ribic, Vincent Segrelles and Alex Ross (Ross if you can ignored his people like always static, not enough action, at least for me). The rest, I feel like they are generic, for example, if I look at David Finch work, is like I looked at Jim Lee/Ivan Reis/etc and all the rest of the industry work. I don't feel like they stand out. Frank Cho, Dave Gibbons, Brian Bolland, Olivier Coipel, Ariel Olivetti and Steve Epting stand a bit in my point of view. Also, I love Greg Capullo but his faces are too cartoonist for me.

Now, I don't know any animation artists, so I can't talk about it.
