This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

did you construct that drawing or did you copied it? did you used any references? if so, how?
clothing is pillow shaded, volumes or forms are not there, it lacks fundamental understanding
animu face is correct, but it seems to be just a copy from a competent artist, which as it happened to me in the past, leads to bad habits and to delusions of your current ability
>>
>>2290023
No it is not copied. I did not use references. I would like some advice on how to shade clothing.

it's not about "hot to sade ____ (put something)"
it's more aobut understanding light RULES which are universal
you have to analyze different factors such as:
main light position and direction against your figures
then deduce where shadows start, where cast shadows will be (not by guessing or by eye like you are doing naively, but instead by understanding the knowled about light and optics)
you also have to think about light bounces that make shadows lighter
ambient light
how different materials reflect light (your rendering of clothing is like it's plastic and wet
the stairs or roof are flat due to value and lack of form

you have to try learning light fundamentals for that, here is simplified: http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm

Ok so let's say I'm trying to stylize a,nd draw characters with big eyes.

I pick some base color then pull out the local color slowly through blending. I'm not sure if this works for other software but I use SAI-- specifically the marker tool. Like in this picture, I just started with a color then picked the literal local color (usually really saturated) then slowly let the marker tool blend with the base color. Using pen pressure, I press harder to make it blend faster to the local color. I probably didn't really explain that very well but the basic idea is to pull the local color out from the base color, slowly building up, then blending the local color with the color of the light hitting it.

Apart from that, I try to think of warm light/cool shadows and cool light/warm shadows when trying to get more color variety. It often feels like a guessing game for me sometimes so I hope to get a more tangible control of my color choices as I study.

You have a nasty tangent where the end of her foot touches the knee exactly at one point which makes it hard to tell which is in front. You should either overlap the foot and leg or just don't make them touching.

I'd pull the camera back a bit to have more simple background and give the viewer an easier time wit the picture. Right now I feel there are too many elements on too little surface. You can keep it cluttered and still give it more simple background to frame it better.

Also, the perspective is all over the place, and it's pretty distracting

Excuse the abysmal camera quality.

Personally this drawing's almost about done but will probably require some touchups, especially on the strawberry.

In the past I've had people tell me to improve my line quality/control and especially worry about getting my hatching lines to go all the way to the borders of the areas they're hatching to prevent white halos from appearing around borders.

I tried working on both of those.

Complaints about anything, not just those two, are welcome.

Shade with the contour of the forms to help the objects look more round. For example on the strawberry you're doing straight strokes across a surface that's supposed to be round which makes it look flat.

The ink or whatever you're using for the dark shadows doesn't seem to mesh well with the rest of the drawing. In general, work on your hatching and crosshatching because it looks quite messy overall.

Why would I fammerino? It's not like that can't be faked, attempting to escape the uncertainty anonymous imageboards provide is pointless. For one to say "samefag" in an accusatory manner is effectively to make it so, even if it isn't the truth. Posting a screenshot is just a way to be that much more of a faggot.

On another note, is it better to let your style develop in a faux-vacuum or actively pursue stylizations that you like and study them?
>>
>>2291503
>is it better to let your style develop in a faux-vacuum or actively pursue stylizations that you like and study them?

there's no "better" way, if you see an artist doing something you like, cross reference it with proper real world references to understand how/why they make those stylistic choices and then implement it in future works if you feel like it. just don't wholesale bite another person's style unless it's like a one off homage/practice for staying "on model". if you want to consciously avoid picking up other people's stylistic quirks that's perfectly fine as well, tho it might take a bit longer to "get good" so to speak without all the "standing on the shoulders of giants" as some might put it

thank you!
i think i'll try and fix the perspective on them and when the color goes in they'll have comic panels and sketching on them so hopefully they wont be too inorganic and blend better. now that im looking they do look pretty harsh compared to the feel of the rest of the drawing. maybe if i have one curve up slightly against some grass they'll come across as lighter

When studying other artists or pictures is it better to draw for likeness or draw without trying to get it 100% correct?
>>
>>2291632
Depends on what you're studying.
>construction, proportion, etc
try to get these as correct as possible
>line quality, shading techniques, particular stylizations
these are unique to each person (usually...) and simply going for likeness will usually get your point across if you're just copying an artist to get a feel for it.

Your linework isn't terrible but it needs direction. Especially with the fluffy bits, envision the mass of each lump before you line it. Often scratchy lines come from not knowing where the line is going in the first place.

If you're trying to go for a lively then you need to have a pose that is similarly suggestive of liveliness. The basic line of motion is just a slight curvature of a vertical line which is probably why you feel it's particularly bland and lacking energy.

I'm not gonna point any huge mistakes, but I think you should make the abs lines softer, it seems the belly buttom while it's not, the belt is not following hips silouette, it's too vertical and makes the girl boddy more straight and less femenine, that skirt don't contact anywhere the skin, that don't help to make it appealing and it's neither logic while jumping up, shirt seems to be way too flat, it lacks form so we can't even see her flat chest

I hope he doesn't mind me outing him, though his style is pretty recognizable so I guess it's inevitable. Look up Jace Wallace. Haven't seen him here in quite a while, but he does visit now and then. Or maybe he posts in the alternative thread like this which I don't often drop by in. He's got lots of images floating online, I recall once like a year ago or something some fanboy anon here dumped hundreds of his paintings here in a couple threads, a lot of which may not have been online elsewhere? Almost all were girls/pinup things so I fully believe he can do it without refs. When you do something enough you'll get damn good at it.

Eh, I don't see him bothering with 3d models. It's faster and easier to just paint it. And nothing he is doing is out of the realm of believability when it comes to painting without ref. Or maybe you are just saying it appears that way?A lot of people assumed Rigney was doing 3d models when he first posted his art online. Nope, all 2d, no reference (at the time). Just happened to have a similar aesthetic.

The colors are muddy and shitty (and I mean that literally, they look like you mixed a bunch of crap on a palette and painted with it) The pose is wonky, but it's comic-booky, so that's somewhat OK. Hatching and soft shading at the same time are difficult to make work.

>>
>>2293419
It's horrible, you nuked your own lineart with that shit criteria for values and color. What the fuck.
- don't use airbrush ever again, if you do, kill yourself after
- work on general values, make contrasts, plan them porperly
- pick up colors from references that make sense and explore why that saturation and values makes sense (tones are the least important thing)
>>

>>
>>2293467
another anon, but that's not how this works
>>
>>2293467
You are an idiot. It doesn't matter if she's twisting, look at the position of her breasts and the angle of her collarbones. The vertical distance between the collarbone and breast is a fixed distance with horizontal play based on shoulder arc. If you raise your right arm your collarbone angles upwards and brings the pectorals WITH IT. There is NO indication that her left breast should be higher than the right breast given the angles of her collarbone and there is NO indication of horizontal play because the left arm is clearly a lateral view as there is no medial musculature visible. I'm not sure what world you come from where clavicles are pullede downwards and breasts are able to magically oppose this motion.

It takes two seconds to imagine this figure rotated to a fully frontal view to see that her breasts are wrong.
