You inking isn't very consistent lighting-wise. Look at which planes on the sleeve are inked, then find common planes elsewhere in the image like on her face and neck and stuff and you see they aren't in shadow. Keep your light source consistent! Common plane=common value. I also think you would do well to simplify the shadow shapes more but that's largely a taste thing I suppose. Her shoulders are also super wide for a chick and the lapels on her jacket look rather odd.

Yeah when I zoomed out I could see the light and shadow weren't consistent. I messed with it some more, looking at maybe having hatching along with it. I think I want some element of hatching, but not too much. I think simpler shadow shapes will actually work better though, so I'll have to try that on the next one. And well, the character is supposed to be Leon Belmont so I didn't design his jacket, although I think the lapels on the real design look really cool, I just suck.
This is really hard, trying to consciously develop a style. It's like trying to invent a language, and you have to make up all these rules for every scenario. I'm feeling sort of discouraged about it today.

Well looking at pictures of hte original character I see those lapels are pretty distinctive, so maybe play them up a bit? I did a quick paintover. I don't do inking or comic stuff at all so it might be a bit crude, but I tried to capture hte character a bit more and make him more masculine. Changing hte hair to be a bit more in stands and that messy look in it helps make it more of a guy's haircut, and then chiseling in the stronger eyebrows and facial structure pushes that further, plus the manly giant lapels. Also tried to balance hte black values throughout the image better.

Not the only way to approach it, but one way to solve some of the issues.

Also to use your style/language analogy...language doesn't develop overnight. It's the result of centuries of being used, absorbing pieces of other languages, and then evolving on its own organically. This is how a language can be a rich thing of beauty. Compare that to Esperanto where it is faked in a day, and you get something that never catches on and lacks the same interest and poetry within it. Don't force a style, don't expect it to happen overnight. And while languages have "rules" they also break those rules all the time (slang, local dialects, expressions, etc), that's how they grow and develop.

Not as good as some of your other stuff. Rendering seems a bit lazy and it's lacking your usual scale, though that's more of a design choice I guess. The building in her panty band isn't really reading that well either, it kinda looks like she bent down, put it under there and then stood up? I dunno, seems off.
>>
>>2285811
Thanks, that looks way better than what I did. I know you basically said Rome wasn't built in a day but I feel like this is never going to happen for me. I've been at this way too long to still be struggling with this. I'm going to be mediocre for fucking ever. Thanks for trying to help me anyway though.
>>
>>2285828
Man I feel the same way many days. But I find it is good to ground yourself sometimes and take a proper look at things. How long have you actually been at it? You say way too long. But I'm guessing what, maybe 5 or 6 years max? Say it's even more, say 10 years of study and work. Well even if you did 10 years, you still have another several decades (at least) left to keep working at it. Even if you only improve slowly that's a ton of time. Progress doesn't happen in a linear way anyhow. You sometimes gotta keep flatlining it for a while before jumping up to a much higher level.

I've been doing better with this stuff by trying to avoid comparing myself to others too much. And try to reevaluate what you want with your art. Is technical skill the end goal? Do we admire Rembrandt purely for his skill? No, that's only a part of it. It's the emotion and human spirit he can capture that's truly amazing. Same goes for any great artist really, it is not just the skill we admire, it's what they are saying. And while sometimes you need that skill to be able to properly say what you want, it should always be a means to an end rather than an end in itself. I don't think many people today seem to fully comprehend that. That's why the work in the ARC competitions and stuff always feels like utter crap even if some of it from a technical standpoint is pretty good.
>>
>>2285812
Looks really nice, though I am a bit confused by the legs. Why is one bare? And why does only one have a kneepad thingy? Considering she's wearing a winter jacket she'd probably have snowpants or something on too. Not really any need for a single kneepad.
>>
>>2285838
Actually, people who do a lot of single-knee kneeling, like soldiers, tend to wear a kneepad only on their down knee to minimize clutter while still being comfortable.
>>
>>2285836
I've been trying to get good enough to go pro since I was in middle school, and I've been selling art and showing portfolios for just over 10 years. For the past 3 years I've gotten the same response, solid work but no style, no voice. The fact that it looked to you like I haven't been at it for more than 5 years just shows how much of a joke I still am. I just wanted to draw comics, I just want a job where I can do art and live off of it, but I just. Fuck. I guess I just can't do this today.
>>
>>2285812
At first glance, I thought that was Lucca from Chrono Trigger. I dig it though.
>>
>>2285857
>For the past 3 years I've gotten the same response, solid work but no style, no voice.

The worst kind of limbo. Not good enough to get recognition, but not shit enough to be made fun of. At that point, you really just have to start studying other artists you like and dissecting why their work is appealing to you so you can incorporate it into your own stuff.
>>
>>2285857
I think your work has plenty of style. Not the guy who wrote >>2285836, but he even said "don't compare yourself to others." Da Vinci tossed countless drawings into the fire because he wasn't satisfied with them. Your fundamentals are pretty damn good, you just need a tiny push. You have any examples of colored work?

Yeah, that's what I'm supposed to be doing now. I made an influence map and everything, for the first time ever. The hardest part is this shadow thing. You used the shadow areas perfectly in your paintover, the way I think I want, yet my tendency for most of my life has been to use lines, and in those moments where something of mine seems to spark interest in someone, it's usually just linework. But I love the look of those heavy shadows and stark contrast, I can remember specific instances of things like that jumping out at me all the way back to childhood, even down to loving black and white spotted cats and cows and border collies. I don't understand how I could visually love this look yet be totally unable to visualize things that way well enough to draw them and execute it.
>>2285889
Thanks anon, dunno if I agree though. I'm just now delving into color too, still no idea what I'm doing there, whether to go cell shading or painting or what. I'm experimenting with this.
>>
>>2285901
Oh no no. I'm not the anon who made the edit. I just understand the situation you're in with your art. It's something I'm working on myself. I made a list of artists who's work I really like and made a influence folder with their work to study from. Didn't mean to confuse.
>>
>>2285912
Ah, well either way it's still just confusing and frustrating. When I look at other artists and how they went about developing a style, it seems like they knew a thing they liked visually and they just started using it. Isn't that basically what you're doing, just picking the things you like in your influential artists' work and incorporating it? I've been trying for a while, like years, to do this shadow thing but it never seems to work. I don't know what to do about it. Should I just chose different artists as my influence or should I keep fighting for this element that I can't seem to wrap my head around?

I honestly don't understand this guy. Actually there's a few guys lately who post their work, it seems like not for actual critique, but as a dare. If you're gonna deflect everything that people tell you is wrong with it, why even keep posting here? I don't understand it. I know I probably shouldn't even bring it up but I get to a point where I'm so damn confused.

Wanting to go pro since middle school means very little. Most middle schoolers lack the knowledge or resources to fully go at it. And even if you DO get the right resources and work hard it doesn't mean anything will come from it because your brain hasn't fully developed. If you look at old masters even the most talented ones with the best training from age 11 only start to get really good in their early/mid 20's.

I assumed 5 or 6 years because most of the board is under 22, and not many people get into art before their late teens. Most people on this board only have a couple years under their belt.

All that being said, just chill out man. Take some time to do some personal work. Take a break from looking at other people's artwork. Go outside, take a walk each day. Meditate. Figure out what you want to do with your art exactly (or a direction you want to go). Don't do fanart or think about what artist X would be doing if he were doing this same drawing. Do what you want, and trust your gut. Try to step out of your comfort zone and learn new things--do some exercises you haven't done before, try some new media and techniques, try reading some books etc. Don't think about what other people will think about things. It can take decades to develop a style fully. You may see other people around you getting some distinct style super fast--don't compare yourself or worry. Most of people who develop a strong style early on stagnate early too anyhow. Take a look at the work you did one or two years ago--can you see improvement? If yes, then that's all that matters. If no, then figure out why you haven't been improving and what you need to do to improve again.

Worst case scenario just accept you are having a bad day and see how you are tomorrow. Nothing wrong with going through a slump or three. Sometimes taking a break for a bit from art can be useful too.

Also if you really have some extreme self confidence issues or other issues surrounding your art, it's worth going to therapy. I go weekly and it's helped a lot with stuff. Man we're pretty much in the same shoes there. Maybe that's partly why I get like this, I feel like there's a lot of people looking for something great from me and I can't deliver. I also really need to start getting work or something stable, my current situation isn't going to be viable much longer, it practically isn't now. The pressure from these things gets to me. Yeah man, sounds pretty similar. I did freelance for a while but kind of stopped a couple times due to some rather intense depressions and insecurities. I got a remote studio job but just left that like a month ago and now I have no work, and feel the financial pressure to start getting some soon again.

Seriously the best things for me have been therapy and also I got off facebook and tried to stop comparing myself to others as much in a negative way (facebook is really bad for that). It's one thing to look at someone and say "wow they're incredible, what an inspiration! Good for them!" and another to look and say "I will never be that good, I am destined to be mediocre. Why am I not as good as they were at my age? Why after X years am I not as good as they were after X years?".

There's a few artists' lives I think about often. Rockwell, who was wracked with insecurities his entire life even when he was the most famous artist in America and was constantly afraid of running out of ideas or failing his next painting and worked and worried so much that he was a terrible father and husband. FX Leyendecker who lived in his brother JC's shadow his entire life and despite being an incredible artist led a horribly depressed life and eventually succumbed to alcohol and drugs at an early age. And Walter Everett, one of hte most talented illustrators of his time who constantly missed deadlines from not being happy enough to submit his art to his directors, and then his entire family left him because he became so obsessed with art that he ignored them and didn't pay rent and stuff. later in his life he quit illustration and burned most of his life's work. I look at their lives as a warning of what happens when you don't get your mental health and outlook in check properly. I think most of it stems from feelings of inadequacy and self esteem.

Damn man, I didn't know that about any of those guys. Fuck, yeah I need to take a step back and not fall into that line of thinking. I really want to find some studio work, though. I thought if I did, besides just helping out financially, maybe having steady work would help me keep my mind from wandering into those thoughts of insecurity, and I've often been told having deadlines forces you to be inventive and that can lead to developing a style. I'm stressing because I feel like if I can't do something with style first, I'm never gonna get a studio job. Kind of a vicious cycle.

I don't have much experience with studios so can't really help with that to be honest. The experience I have had though (with one studio job and then various freelance) was that they didn't give a shit about my style. They basically had a vision and wanted me to be flexible enough to work to that style. It's pretty soul crushing to work on stuff that isn't to my taste, or I can tell is garbage like when they just want bigger boobs and more rimlights and stuff, or they just say "make it more realistic" and you start to question why you are even bothering to paint when they would be happy with a lazy photobash. I've heard second hand stuff too about even big names like Zedig, who has a super distinct style, not being allowed to do his own thing on projects.

So maybe the style thing is not as big an issue as you think in terms of getting work. I would expect the top three things for getting a studio job are: overall technical skill/knowledge (good portfolio proves this), ability to work quickly and consistently (slight gamble when hiring an unknown, but lots of experience indicates they are good at this), and a good personality that is nice to work with in teams (referrals/connections are good for proving this).
>>
>>2286264
Maybe it's good that style upfront doesn't seem to matter, at least that's one less thing to worry about on my end, since it's just going to take time to develop no matter what. I figure it would get pretty bad after a while but I think I need that experience in a weird way. I just need to figure out a workflow then, so i can jam out some shit for a portfolio and go in. I have some friends working at one place so at least I can get a recommendation there, guess I'll be on my own with the others, but I have some work experience under my belt, hopefully that'll give me some credibility. Thanks for the tips, anon, this is seriously helping me more than you know.

Hey, one more question though...
Since you were talking about how they just kind of want you to be able to do whatever they need... should I like... I mean should I just make some tacky, over the top shit with like saturated colors and loud rimlights and shit and just throw that shit together? I mean if I just need the job. Or should I actually put effort into honing and demonstrating my craft in my portfolio. It might be better for me to make a really good portfolio like that after I have a job and some financial stability, since I figure it'll take a while. And if I'm not likely to be putting heart and soul into the work I'd be doing for them anyway..? Or is that just the wrong mentality altogether?

Hm, that's the type of question that I think is best answered by yourself. You know whether you would be able to put up with that.

Personally, I can't man. I couldn't stand a job where I was doing stuff that wasn't honest with myself. There's not much joy in feeling more like someone else's wrist than an artist.

Another thing to consider is that the type of work you do will bring in more of that work. So if you fill a portfolio with rimlights and strong colours--guess what, you will get a job doing that. And then you will spend all day making more pieces like that. And after some time, say a few months or a year, you will look back and see that's all you did and all you have to show. But if you don't want to do that work you need to show something else.

There is also the danger of losing your passion for art. If you spend all day doing stuff you hate you will start to associate that with art in general. What you love to do becomes something you despise. That's what has happened with me, where I begin to hate that work, then I feel like crap and in my time off I don't even do much of my own painting anymore or develop my own pieces. In my opinion, at least in my case, I think it is best to focus on my own work and do my own thing, then hopefully I will find clients that like it and ask for more of it. The whole reason I got into art as a career was because I love art and would rather it than some office job I hate. If I take on art jobs I hate then what's the difference? (Except art jobs pay shittier than other jobs I can do) Some people recommend getting a non-art part time job instead of taking on shitty art jobs so you don't lose passion.

Now all that being said, it is possible to take on some shitty job and pump out commercial crap while developing your own stuff on the side. Some people can do it and have done it successfully. I can't. I would consider carefully whether you think you can do it or not before jumping in.

I have worked some art jobs I wasn't 100% in love with before, but they seemed to have fueled my passion to work on my own stuff rather than draining me, and even though I quit them I learned some valuable skills that I still use. Even so, one of those jobs I quit specifically because I couldn't use any of what I was doing for them in my portfolio and I realized what a trap it would become. So with that in mind, I'll do the best I can to keep my artistic integrity and put my best foot forward in my portfolio. Taking on a job for the experience isn't going to be worth it to me if I can't build on it, so I better make sure I land a job with real potential. At least if I can, you never know what I may get stuck with but I'll go at it with an "aim for the moon, land in the stars" attitude. Again, thanks man, you've given me a lot to think about.

Kinda relearning the anatomy and facial features

Critique?
>>
>>2286318
Don't be too discouraged , anon. In seeing a fair level of construction and form here!
Check the beginner thread, there are many people worse than you.
However the head does seem a bit flatter than the rest of the body and the legs are very wrong, with the upper half of them being longer than the lower half, also you didn't draw the feet

From the first and second figure I see, I can tell that you obviously know a little bit about a anatomy, however, that doesnt stop it from being very wrong
All the figures suffer from being very flat and having lots of symbol drawing in them.
The first drawing shows some level of competency with anatomy, but the figure is very flat. The head is flat and also seems to be missing half its skull.
The second figure has a very skinny neck and seems to be suffering from some muscle atrophy .
And the head at the bottom is flat and drawn with a lot of symbols.
Also you seem to be avoiding hands a lot. Don't do that
Over all there is a lot of basic mistakes here , I would recommend checking out keys to drawing and more and more figure/life drawings .

I was gonna just do a redline for the feet but then I got distracted by your weird clothing folds. Don't just draw random overlapping marks! Really think about how the cloth drapes over the body, and how thick the cloth is. Peri's pjs look paper thin bc of the way you drew folds.
Also I know d/ic/ks hate sycra but his video on feet is super informative.

Quite nice man. The nose looks rather strange with the double cast shadows each with aline around them, and the bridge of the nose feels a bit long too.

I'm not sure why you would need two hands to operate a device like that. Presumably there would be a safety feature like on a lighter or something where you need to hold a sliding thing forward while squeezing a trigger or something so there are two things needed to turn it on but it can be done with a single hand. I actually like the look of the two hands and a cord, but it isn't that practical when you take a second and start to think it over. The cord too doesn't hang naturally. Unless it is super stiff (why would it be?).

And I'm the anon that made the thread with the picture of the goose screaming, asking for a mod to change the sticky

I also wrote most of the boilerplate text for the anime threads. The threads used to be way better and there was more solidarity. Teal posted and redlined and gave hope to new people maybe if they practiced linear perspective enough it would help them with constructive figure invention and then maybe then better stylized art.

Then he got too popular and someone with a very mean streak drug his life until he just gave up and disengaged. He'll post a random thing on /co/ and that's it. I guess Kyle took up the goat of departure role after that but even then there was less skulduggery off-site by people with ill intent or otherwise. Crossboarders from /a/ and /pol/ and shit.

But you know, whatever. I was a cross boarder from /v/ around 2010-2011 and I started coming here because I had an earnest interest not only in learning digital art methods but also art history. I have /ic/ to thank for like 80% of my matured/current taste in art. I wouldn't never have discovered the likes of Beksinski, Barlowe, Kieth Thompson, KJG, Terada, etc. /ic/ and /g/ are the only boards I go to solidly since 2012.

Yeah, the main vibe of the board used to be euro-centric digital painting and concept art. Anime was openly mocked and people were derided for posting it. Guys here were tough and assholish as shit but under that posturing they really cared about art and making good pictures and wanted to help those who wanted to put the work in.

Then more crossboarders started pouring in with the rise in popularity what with tumblr and patreon and everyone just shits on each other or sockpuppets up a hurricane in a teacup. Shit is dumb anymore, man. I can't stand this board anymore because there's just so much offsite plotting and samefaggotry bullshit.
I just keep coming here for gracch, sundry adams, maybe, and thdark, they are OG niggas

>>
>>2287120
You really gotta study some basic breakdowns. How to draw convincing spheres and cylinders, turned in space and in perspective. You really do need to get solid with that. Then you'll be able to build figures out of those shapes and align things properly. If you really are trying, and really do want to get better, that's what you need to do, and I wouldn't tell you this if I hadn't done it myself.

8 year old drawing from when I was 15. I went to architecture school and learned some fundamental drawing before I dropped out because I'd rather do something else. Now I'd really like to start drawing again though. Just as a hobby, without all that pressure and goddamn frustration. This drawing is still better than any of the shit I did in my drawing classes.

Her right leg seems as if it is connected to the side of her stomach. Focus on the thigh. I would put it so that half of it or more is behind the left thigh so we can't see as much

He's rightt that you fucked up, doesnt mean he has to be capable of doing a redline either. But you shouldnt listen to those saying you shouldnt redline at all, because you can fix other problems, this was just a little too high a mark.I know full well how it is to do a redline is kind of stressful if you can get bashed for trying to help. But just aim lower and it should be fine.
>>
>>2287115
i can get behind this, youre on my radar cool anon

You all are a bunch of pathetic faggots. He did a bad redline. He gets it. We all get it. Shut up, nobody fucking cares. You're not proving anything by continually trying to insult him, all you're doing is wasting posts that could be used for actual critique and advice. Stop.

The dude already got called out for doing a bad redline, and he conceded it was bad immediately and someone did a better one. This was done with, and you came in here to start beating a dead horse literally a full day after the fact. Could you possibly be more petty? Stop wasting posts and go draw.

Rather than exasperating something minor you should definitely follow your own advice.

>>
>>2288414
He doesn't get it because he's deliberately trying to justify the shitty redline with shitty reaction images to get a rise out of anons.
>>
>>2288473
He's not. His very first reply he admitted it was bad. Coming in a day later to be like "yeah, it's bad!" when it was over and done with doesn't deserve to be taken any more seriously than a bunch of smug-faced doodles, and he's not even doing that much anymore. It's done. Just stop.
>>
>>2288465
Generally when someone posts something simplistic like this its to get a rise out of the "muh loomis concept art" crowd.
I'm glad it's not though, I do genuinely like it.
>>
>>2288473
I wasn't trying to justify anything. My redline was bad and full of errors, and I fully admit that. The doodles were just poking fun at anons who take this shit waaay to seriously.
>>
>>2288475
People don't like overly defensive dunning-krugers. Who knew? You may not be him but you're far enough up his ass that you two must share DNA at this point.
