A common misconception.
There was nothing hidden. Anyone taking look for more than just two seconds was aware of that. It was just not accentuated by make-up/stylist professionals as nowadays. People are so used to big make-up, fake lashes, professional hair etc. that they perceive it as normal and it's absence as hiding (or as some sort of statement).
