In the images with the fires, what are the red circles? Are they the actual fires? This may be incredibly stupid but they look too artificial and drawn on to me for that to be the case.

They are outlines that are placed over the image that mark actively burning fires. There is a smokey haze and plumes of the smoke surrounding these outlines, so the two go hand-in-hand.

Neat image. I'd swear that looks like a visible image given the texture on the clouds and the fact that you can see ground features. Yet, visible images are all black at night. However, you can clearly see city lights which wouldn't be visible on an IR image. This has to be a composite of some kind I think. Regardless, this is a cool image.

Eh, I skimmed through the image description and missed some information. The image was taken by the visible infrared imaging radiometer and was captured by a special day-night band, which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe dim signals such as city lights and reflected moonlight. In this case, cloud tops were lit by the nearly full Moon.
From what the image description says, I will assume that the land features in the image are derived from infrared radiation being emitted by the earth. Hope this clears things up.
