is Gibbon's Decline and Fall recommended? I know it's considered the first great modern historigraphical text, but is it outdated by our standards? Is it worth reading to learn stuff, or just for the historical significance/appreciation aspect?
>>
A Critical History of Early Rome for anyone interested in that period but unable to really find much on it

>>1002967
reading Gibbon with the butthurt footnotes from 20th century priests was pretty funny
a lot of what he says is outdated by now I'm quite sure, good for laying a groundwork though so you can fill in the potholes later
>>

You could probably get an edition with notes if you're worried about inaccuracies.

I'd personally read a more contemporary history first. Gibbon's is a great read, but yes, it's better read for its significance rather than to use it as your main source.

is "Early Rome" the Kingdom and early Republic? What's the exact timeline? I've been on a Roman history phase lately and have been reading a lot about the early/mid Empire.

All people interested in comics should read Alan Moore's Writing for Comics. And if you want to see his ideas put in practice, read his Promethea, too.

Which is also /occultism & magick/ related, as Moore loves all that shit.

Kingdom and Early Republic, late Republic is very well documented so he leaves off before or around the Second Punic War

From what I understand, much of the information is correct. It's just that it goes into a lot of philosophy than a more pure historical look.
