What do you guys think about Ivan the Terrible? There's pitifully little about him on Wikapedia and it took a while to find a non-meme website about him.

a total nutcase, lead poisoning probably

Seems pretty based.

This. One of Russia's best rulers. Only mistake he did was killing his dynasty.
>>
>>962271
>>962281
I guess I've always been kind of curious about what other world leaders thought of him. Also supposedly he kept a very detailed diary but I can't find an English version anywhere
>>
>>962281
Number two behind Based Pyotr, imo
>>
>>962281
Pretty tragic actually, didn't he bash his sons head in when he was drunk or something?
>>
>>962271
well, he was up until he killed is own heir in a rage, left the throne open to his other retarded son, and let russia fall into the time of troubles.

overall a 7 or 8/10. some really strong points, but the end is so bad that it really brings things down a notch or two.
>>
I just watched the movie Sergei Eisenstein did about him. I'd die to cleanse the land of boyar rule for Ivan-san
>>
Utter cunt who genocided Novgorod (the only civilized and cultured part of Russia), installed a de facto police state and pretty much reinstated the Mongol rule, since he greatly admired the Mongols, claimed a descent from Mamai and the Muscovites were nothing but former Mongol tax collectors.

All in all he's the main reason why Russia remains a hyperviolent, backwards shithole even today.

This

/pol/tards fap to him because he killed a few Turk during his rule.

What a load of bullshit. It wasn't sacked, yes, but still it was a tributary state because of this cunt.

Ivan rule, especially the latter half, was an absolute disaster. He ruined Russia economically, physically exterminated all checks on his power, destroyed all existing local traditions of self-government in Russia and paved the way for the dictator-style rule that Russia always had since his times.

The fact that he is fondly remembered in Russia stems only from the fact that each subsequent government in Russia had a vested interest in embellishing his person, since they all derived their powers and legitimacy from the way in which Ivan turned Russia.

>>962271
>>Drove the Mongolic/Islamic hordes out of Russia

His granddad did that.

Ivan IV conquered two neighboring Khanates and let Moscow be plundered by a third one.

>>Made Russia the biggest nation on Earth
Err, nope. That was long after Ivan died, although it can be argued that the destruction of Kazan paved the way for the eventual conquest of Siberia.

>>Hero to the peasantry
Bs. Ivan's reign exactly coincides with the period during which serfdom was entrenched. It spread into areas it was previously unseen (Northern Russia) and got embellished in law (Code of 1550). It wasn't arguably as bad as it got later, which is why many peasants view Ivan's reign as "good
times", but nevertheless Russia was set by Ivan on the track to become the serfdom shithole.

>>Kept corrupt nobles in check
Rather, he exterminated the traditional nobility, the only social group with both legitimacy and wealth to keep the Tsar from complete autocracy. Ivan did that and Russia paid in blood and tears for it, forever ruled by despots.
>>
>>962378
You know that movie is a blatant propaganda for Stalin, don't you?
>>
>>962378
Honestly, you could watch 300 and Braveheart and marathon through The Vikings and it still won't be as innacurate load of propaganda dogshit as any Eisenmeme film ever.

Established elective local self-governance across Russia.

Started to call consultation assemblies of representatives from all Russian lands (Zemsky Sobor).

Ordered to build Saint Basil's Cathedral, probably the most famous Russian architecture monument.

Turned the nobles into servants of the states.

Conquered 2 remnants of Golden Gorde: Astrakhan and Kazan khanates. With this no strong rivals left on the East, which opened the way to colonization of Siberia. Ivan had troubles whith Crimean khanate, but in the end it was heavily beaten at the Battle of Molodi.

Гpoзный: formidable, fearsome, redoubtable, angry, rampant, bodeful, redoubted.
There you go.
Terrible is Ужacный in Russian. There are no Terrible rulers in Russia, but there was at least one Accursed around 500 years before Ivan IV.

He was a great tsar at the beginning, but the second half went from cool to meh to God help us. He is also terribly infamous due to Russophobia. Poles, Swedes, Germans and Hungarians forgot there was a big and fearsome Russia after the Mongols wrecked it, and they've wrecked Eastern Rome themselves barely 2 decades earlier.
Then suddenly this pretender empire appears and almost eats away catholicised Western Russia and Baltics, having already eaten the Mongols away, perhaps to pound hard on Sweden and Poland later.
As if insignificant faggy Canada "all of a sudden" annexes something over the oceans and comes to destroy and annex northern half of USA. Catholics weren't pleased.

At least Peter I got it right later.

Oh, there's also a semi-mythical tale of him trying to marry Elizabeth of England, because "a queen becomes a wench without a strong tsar to control her, think of the Englishmen" or the like. Elizabeth accepted the gifts but much preferred staying virgin till death, especially knowing how Ivan treated "his son's wench of a princess". Still Russia was heavy on fur and timber export to England through the White sea.

He helped establish Russia as a Nation State by consolidating the Independent russian States

>Bs. Ivan's reign exactly coincides with the period during which serfdom was entrenched
Peasants liked being serf tho that's what they were for. It was the communist poison that fooled them into thinking otherwise.
>>
>>963067
>Bs. Ivan's reign exactly coincides with the period during which serfdom was entrenched.

Not true. Early light forms of serfdom existed before Ivan. At that time peasant had the right to go to other landlord once per year when agriculture season is finished. Hard serfdom appeared only during Romanov's rule and reached its peak at Ekaterina II. Their new dynasty was weak in the beginning: hardening serfdom they bought loyalty of nobles.

Basically he was a nutjob, but a smart one. He had a fucked up childhood that reflected into his politics, and due to russian politics he was forced to go genocide mode on all opposition.
He was apparently utterly in love with his wife, and when she died, he was left unhinged. The paranoia and viciousness that helped him before now hampered him, making him see ploys everywhere and making him strike his own son for just protesting a decision.

That's cool dude, but the Russian nickname was borrowed from Polish where "grozny" means "dangerous".

Just like majority of things in Russian history.

Grozny is adjective from noun Groza which means Thunderstorm in Russian.

No shit. Although the second movie is quite the opposite. It certainly isn't historically accurate, but it wasn't as much of Stalin propaganda as people tend to think it is.
>Also its damn good propoaganda
>>
>>963304
>>963668
OP said no memes. "Grozny" in Russian is a title of extreme reverence. It just means that he was incredibly powerful. It's more like when people refer to the might of God as being "terrible."
