Why is it considered so bad? Sometimes we brush it off such as when telling others not to make the mistakes we did, but in general, why do many find hypocrisy so abhorrent?

If you tell me not to punch people while you are in the process of punching peope, you do not actually believe in not punching people, you are trying to manipulate others until only you punch people. It's a power grab. The only exceptions are when someone is trying to keep you from making a mistake they did in the past.
