Peter didn't kill Ananias and Sapphira, God did.
The reason they were killed is not because they didn't give all their gold but because they lied and said they donated all their money from the land sale but in reality had kept some for themselves; they were punished for deceitfully trying to appear more righteous than they were.

People lie to the Holy Spirit all the time now though. Did the lives of early church members just matter less that God decided to send them to Hell immediately? Is God a utilitarian, thinking eternally damning those two would be a net positive as long as it caused less overall sin ?

We do not know that God sent them to Hell, we only know that God made an example of them to discourage falsehoods within the early church.

I don't think Ananias and Sephira went to hell. I think they went to heaven, kind of ashamed, but still saved. Just nothing to show for their lives; they were saved, but as though through fire.
I do think the early church straightened up right quick when the two of them dropped dead not for doing something evil, but just for lying about how much they had available to give.
I don't think we can draw a parallel between what the Holy Spirit did there, and what He does now. It's not lying to the Holy Spirit that causes death now; it's saying that the Holy Spirit is a liar that causes death now. Eternal death. That's Unbelief, the only unpardoned sin.
The Holy Spirit is witness that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. If you say Jesus is not so, you are calling the Holy Spirit a liar; you are saying the Holy Spirit does the work of the devil.
Such a thing will not be forgiven a man.

Your understanding of salvation is amiss. Salvation is not the purging of sin. Salvation is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit of God.
The forgiveness of sins was accomplished at the cross, for everyone. That is the forgiveness of sins, though, not salvation.
The forgiveness of sins paved the way for God to offer in His grace the free gift of His salvation, His Holy Spirit, to all who believe in Jesus.
While I can't be certain, I would be surprised if Ananias and Sephira did not believe in the risen Christ Jesus. They were therefore quickened, forever, at that moment of belief, and as their sins were already paid for at the cross, they entered into the Kingdom of God.

So then they immediately went to heaven in exchange for a little dishonesty born out of trying to not go broke? That does seem like a great deal. Why were the church members afraid, then?

Their dishonesty was born out of trying to appear more righteous than they were. Had they simply told the truth that they kept some of the money they would not have been smitten.

All christians lie and cheat. Every single one of us.
Lying and cheating start in the heart, and the heart is endlessly wicked. Even after salvation. We're no more empowered to live sinless lives now than we were prior to our salvation.
But something changed.
Something makes me want to sin less, not more. To avoid sin, not embrace it. To shun sin, not glorify it. Something holy in me sees sin as so wicked that only the death of God could fix it.
But know that everyone in heaven was a sinner in their lives, but for Jesus; and that not one single person in heaven thinks they deserve it.
