I don't think I'd want to live or even visit there but there's a certain romanticism I have when looking at pictures of NYC from that era or watching stuff like The Warriors or whatever. There's something really captivating about that grimy urban decay.

The only difference is the youth won't bring about significant change (they will but it will take a longer time) due to the introduction of social media, where we can vent and engage all our frustrations in, instead of actively seeking change outside.

Also consumption of media has never been higher than it is today. We just don't bother spending enough time making the place we live in better.

Most norms were living happy lives in the burbs. It's only their idiot children who insist that suburbs are awful places to live.

I remember the 70s as being very laid back and people talked openly about shit instead of preaching endlessly to one another like now.
>>
>>925899
the 60 are the pinnacle of the middle class

the subsequent decades are the understanding, by the middle class, that the middle class is not meant to be something else than the middle class, aka work and dwell in leisure, always fantasizing about getting richer.
>>

In the 70s my dad's friends were robbed at gunpoint in Central Park in the middle of the day. If that's any indication of how casual/blatant violent crime and robbery was at that time no wonder New York had a reputation. It's greatly improved now and it's a place I'm keen to visit on holiday.

Films like Robocop depict a near future from the 80s that reflected the fear of civil disorder and crime erupting into open war and turning cities into civil warzones and the collapse of society. Fortunately many factors came together to combat crime and ease the pressures that was pushing things down that path.

>failure of sunny late '60s counterculture to bring about any real change

the counterculture diversified the economy in California. It was also a minority with a lot of attention. It didn't bring change because counter-cultures don't impact economic or political change instantly. They're more like a trigger that mostly permeates social change.

>elements of the latter get radical: Weather Underground, Black Liberation Army, Red Army Faction

All these groups were, at most, local threats. They had no significant impact other than scaring people and altering some laws.

>weed & acid ----> coke & heroin

True. Especially in the black communities, which were stabilizing in the 60s, but drugs ravished those communities in the 70s. large minority communites like the Black communities being broke brings the whole system down.

>deindustrialization, 1973 oil embargo, general economic shitiness

True, except the oil embargo was more of a small dent in the economy that it quickly recovered from.

>U.S. withdrawal, and eventual communist victory, in Vietnam

This war was a drain on the US resources. The war lasting as long as it did brought about the economic decline. Ending it actually turned things around.

>cynicism, disillusionment with government/society

That's always existed.

The real reason the 70s sucked was because the economy goes in cycles. It goes up and it goes down. It functions more like a natural event than a man-made one. 70s were just a low point. there will be others, just as there always has been.

Last one, I feel like all of these capture what you guys are talking about ITT perfectly. My mom actually grew up in NY in the 70's/80's, in a public housing project inhabited mostly by Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. Lots of interesting stories from her, but she always told me that even though it was 'cool' there are things she saw and experienced that shed be better off without.

That looks like it's from the late 90s at the absolute earliest.

My parents both grew up in NYC suburbs in the 70s and lived in NYC in the 80s. It's kind of crazy hearing about how much things have both changed and sort of remained the same in the last 30-40 years.

Yeah, taking a better look at it I think you're right- judging by the cars and clothes people are wearing etc.

I think middle income people are all around more comfortable, narrowing the pool of dissidents to the severely dissaffected. Also governments have become masterful at propaganda, 24/7 media and the internet managed to both create and destroy perception of the Occupy movement over the course of a week.

I'd be surprised if the US government wasn't seriously concerned over the movement escalating at the time.

Violence gets more attention, sadly. Especially if you can justify suicide attacks since the perps don't need to worry about consequences. Although there is an interesting back-and-forth about whether suicide bombers have suicidal tendancies before hand or if they are mentally healthy people who get brainwashed.

Shouldn't we develop an economy that stays consistent? Capitalism seems too prone to crisis.
>>

People have tried that in various forms, and despite its many shortcomings, the USSR was usually less affected by global economic downturns.

I agree with your latter statement, but there's more BLM than just fighting police brutality. The black community has more problems than just the police; BLM ought to be concerned more with community outreach and volunteer works in areas where it's needed, same as old black rights' activists used to do.

Which made it all the better. I'm a pretty hardcore introvert, so when during the big crash and bankruptcy the streets were empty at daytime it was the coolest thing. I LOVED having an entire downtown to myself. Alas, now that the city actually has its shit together and people are moving back in there are people around so I can't run around the streets pretending I'm spiderman.

Seconding this. Pretty /his/, considering it was actually a true story.

The stretch of time from the late 70s to the early 80s had it's own sort of bleak and depressing nature. I can't think of an album that captures the feeling of that time better than Unknown Pleasures:

It literally was just blacks moving north

not even /pol/ its just how it is

the only way we got it down was by imprisoning more people than any other society in history, and often on completely crap charges (e.g. 650mg of coke = life)
