What was land of Hungary like and who lived there before the Magyar settled there?

>What was land of Hungary like
like shit for anyone who wasn't a part of nobility
and on top of that, as the WWI approached, they tried to culturally and linguistically destroy their minorities, who lived there before they moved in, which answers the other half of your question.

>who lived there before the Magyar settled there?
based ancient Slavic Magna Moravia, only good Slavic realm, before was raped by despicable Magyars into oblivion and ruined chances of any Slavic nation to join civilized western europe.

Don't worry, Svatopluk will make Moravia Great again.

There were Slavs living in Greater Moravia and the Pannonian principality, the western edges ruled by East Franks, the southeast of the basin under the rule of Bulgarians, and in between fragmented Avar survivors of the past Khaganate mixed with more Slavs.

There were some romance remnants too, namely in the area of lake Balaton at least one fortified town existed where archeologists found artefacts of people now dubbed as pannonian romance speakers - the local town is still named Keszthely, after latin castellum.

Dont think there was much organized statehood in the basin as a whole though, there were some fortified small towns and villages hinted around and that was it, overall both written and archeological records are relatively scarce for the era, plus the fact Magyars are not known to have found much if any resistance when entering.

Also heres an interesting thing, avar and Magyar burial site often coincide while Magyar and Slav locations never, which is one of teh argument that gave rise to a "double conquest" hypothesis

>With regard of the connections between the Magyars and the Turkic tribes, archaeologist Gyula László mooted an alternative theory in the 1960s.[77] According to his theory of the "double conquest", a large group of people who spoke a Finno-Ugrian language arrived in the Carpathian Basin in 670, and a Turkic-speaking people conquered the same territory in the late 9th century.[77] László's theory has never been widely accepted.[78]

It remains somewhat popular still and its proponents are trying to wash away dude aliens lmao tier attachments and make it a sound theory since decades now.

Its never going to be accepted but goes showing much of of ancient Hungarian and pre-Hungarian pannonian basin history is unknown and sketchy.

I wish. Nationalistic memes aside:

0. Land of Hungary was flat fertile steppe in rich Danubian basin
1. Panonnia was inhabiteted mostly by Slavs
2. There are burial grounds with both Avar and Slavic rite
3. Slavs created their own mighty realm after fall of Avar Empire (during rule of Charlemagne)
4. Great Moravia was quite advanced realm (by early medieval standards) (There are still Americunts who believe Great Moravia was located in Serbia despite century of excavations in Czech Republic)
5. Great Moravia was eventually destroyed by Magyars/natural disasters/being overextended/who knows why/something else/combination of above
6. some Slavic Moravian nobles probably joined Magyars because lol, loot, ftw.
7. Magyars carved out their own mighty kingdom, they were probably mixed with local Slavic substrate
(compare Hungarian word Asztal = table and Slavic Stul > poor Hungarian nomads didn't have word for tables and were forced to use Slavic one(
