A lot, Johnson didn't know shit about foreign policy. The domino theory was pretty much fact during the 50's and 60's, Communism was spreading throughout asia, africa, and latin america like wildfire. We thought that by propping up anti-communist regimes in asia, we could stop its spread. Fortunately, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea were being led by competent autocrats. Unfortunately, South Vietnam was being run by corrupt inept bullies. From a worldwide view, Vietnam didn't seem like a bad idea. However that was exactly our problem, we always viewed Vietnam in terms of a proxy war between the Eastern Bloc and West instead of the nationalistic war it really was. Ho chi minh only adopted Soviet communism as a way to build a nationalistic Viet state. Their close relations with the Soviets was out of circumstance, as they wanted to offset Red China's influence.
That said, Johnson doesn't get a pass. Nixon was far superior in international affairs and even after he inherited the worst foreign disaster of any president in the 20th century.
