Netherlands is a nation with the distinguished Flemish Nationalities and different traditions and culture.
Belgium is the same except it's Catholic with slight disparities in culture, hence the reason it chose to stay with the Habsburgs during William Orange's revolt.

I don't know about Belgium, but the Netherlands have had extreme good luck in their history.
We shouldn't have achieved independence, really.
One of the reasons we actually 'won' the war for independence was because some lost sailors accidently sailed to Den Briel and found it undefended.

These nations existed at the moment when intra-european power struggles were suppressed by more powerful outside powers, and as long as this state holds, they will continue to exist.
If, say, Europe had been turned into a collection of client states by the Ming dynasty in 1600, and we were still under their rule today, we would have the states existing at that time.

I was lamenting the fact that Willy III bit the dust before a proper union could take hold.
It was also that it spelled the end to the main branch of the house of Orange-Nassau. After this, only the Kingdom of the United Netherlands was a revival of the Dutch nation, but the newly crowned Kings proved to be ineffective rulers which drove a wedge between the North and the South. After the death of the final male heir, we even lost Luxembourg (who ended up having a female Arch Duchess anyways 2 generations later).
Funny how close we've gotten a few times. First under Cromwell; whose invitation to the Dutch Republic (and their respective) to join his puritan Commonwealth created the tradition of Anglo-Dutch wars. Secondly we'd have William III ascend to the throne after the Glorious Revolution (only to die later on, leaving no proper ties between the two nations), and lastly; a bid from the Kingdom of the Netherlands to join the Commonwealth after the Second World War (much like Norway's bid, rejected due to having a sovereign head of state).
