Keep in mind Polynesians were also the most advanced ocean-goers outside of Europe at the time. They followed stars, currents, tracked clouds, and payed real close attention to the migrations of birds as they went form island to island. They'd also bring seeds and animals with them and drop them off on random islands they found before setting off again, just so that other people would be able to settler there in the future.
