Nigger you know regardless the dude with little reinforcement and his own peers in the Carthaginian Senate giving him a massive handicap fucked Romans up for 18 years.

Hannibal is the penultimate god damn underdog, show some respect.
>>
>>866590
The dude lost a shitton of men, mounts, and supplies trying to cross the Alps and then defeated incompetent Roman generals in confused army commands a few times before just stubbornly walking around Italy for a while and then going home only to get exposed to shit by Scipio at Zama*

An underdog? Sure. But not a very good one.

You are so full of shit and bias its not even funny at this point. The political and administrative leaders back home in Carthage disavowed his campaigning and war against Rome, more or less actively sabotaged his calls for reinforcements, aid, and funding and crippled his effort to defeat Rome and despite all of this he STILL never lost a SINGLE BATTLE IN ITALY for 18 fucking years. Even with losing a significant portion of his army and supplies crossing the Alps, Hannibal never lost a single battle with continually and vastly numerically superior Roman armies and their allies.

>incompetent Roman generals
Bullshit. You don't spend nearly two full decades in a hostile country in the heartland of your enemy fighting solely against incompetent leaders. That's utter bullshit.

He was even forced to further stretch his meager forces because the Italic allies he gained from his constant victories didn't aid him much in terms of manpower to replace his losses (that was mainly the Celtic and Gaulic allies he impressed in Hispania and Gaul in the first place) and was forced to delegate portions of his army to protect the city states that joined him.

The man was a strategic and tactical genius, he solely lost the war because Carthage itself which he needed half-assed and then turned a blind eye to try and have insurance to write him off in case the war didn't pan out. Which is what happened because they didn't really give a shit in the first place.

You are just a downplaying bastard.

Besides winning so costly, Pyrrhus is famous for being
1) The Warrior King par excellence of the age.
2) Ragequitting campaigns.

He made a horrible mistake by not marching straight to Rome right after Cannae. He lingered in Italy for too long and his offensive gradually lost momentum. Other than that he was great

I never said that he was bad or anything, I just said kikethage BTFO. Yes, they got men into Italy and kept them there trampling around for 18 years, but to not be able to then take Rome and win at that point points to a serious lack of dedication or boldness. I find what >>866788 said hard to believe, how could Carthage not take Rome seriously when a smaller Rome kicked Carthage's ass in the previous war? It defies logic.

Not the guy you were talking too but it is worth mentioning that it was a truly massive strategic blunder to carry elephants across the alps instead of something more practical like siege equipment, which was the reason why he was never really able to solidly gain ground against the Romans, because he lacked the means of penetrating their walled cities. Only like, 3 elephants made it across anyway so its not like they even amounted to much in the grand scheme of things.

Fabian wasn't dumb, either, he knew that he only had to do to Hannibal what Vietnam did to America and Afganistan did to the Soviet Union: outlast them. Which they did. And you're right about the Roman military leadership not being entirely run by incompetents, at the Battle of the Metaurus they destroyed Hannibal's back up, the siege equipment that he so desperately needed and had been waiting years for, and just as a giant middle finger flung the head of Hasdrubal Barca (his brother, the commanding general of that army) into his camp. At that point Hannibal was basically crippled strategically in Italy, and calling him back to North Africa after Scipio landed his personal army there and was threatening Carthage was the only sensible option for Hannibal at that point in the campaign.

>Hannibal never lost a single battle with continually and vastly numerically superior Roman armies and their allies.
His trakc record for set piece battles instead of ambushes is actually 2:1. Most of his victories were ambushes.

Not that they weren't brilliant, mind you.

>MUH CARTHAGE BETRAYAL
How, exactly, was Carthage to help him?
At this point n history, ROME ruled the sea. Not carthage.

>fighting solely against incompetent leaders
Most of his battles WERE against poor leaders. Fabius treated him like the nuisance he was, and Hannibal had absolutely no ability to deal with him.

Hannibal was never, ever going to win. Ever. His entire thought process was based around assumptions taken from how Hellenic states played the great game. The moment rome refused to surrender despite the loss of a field army, his plan started ot unravel and Carthage was fucking doomed.

This same type of thinking is what let Macedon to involve itself, and ultimately lead to their conquest by the Romans as well.

>>867457
He lost battles against the romans, too.

>>867893
He didn't have anywhere near the manpower to take the city. Rome had two urban legions ready to fight, plus the actual populace, which, being a city where ALL landowners are liable for service, was armed to the teeth.
