No only a small percentage of land owners had slaves at all, ~4% and almost all were in the south. Slaves were metaphorically high end farming equipment, why mistreat it?

Compared to South America and the Caribbean it was pretty good, mainly because the price of a slave in the US was exorbant compared to Haiti.So it was just good buisness to keep what you paid dearly for in good health.
Did some masters abuse slaves in obscene ways? Yes. Did some consider them children of Christ and treat them as almost extended family? Less common but yes. Mostly it was a superior/servant relationship with a silent threat of force.

It was ALL bad, even when it was "light" it was STILL fucking slavery.
Even if you were a nice fat house slave, you were STILL PROPERTY. No rights.
It was all bad, and any historian with half a brain will tell you there was NOTHING good about slavery. It is considered one of the most ill moral times for the USA, a fucked up chapter that is long gone, but not forgotten.

I don't think you are getting the fact that you are PROPERTY. You have lived in a society and culture of individual freedom for so long, I think the idea of having someone OWN you is incapable of getting through to you.
PROPERTY. You can't eat unless they say eat. You can't stop working, unless they say stop working, you can't go anywhere, unless they say you can go, you can't learn/school yourself, unless they say its ok.

There is nothing good about slavery. Nothing. It stunts the morality of both the slaver and the slaved.
