The USSR and the USA were (and are still in the USA) just crazed by their scope of power and influence. Yes, the USSR was shit compared to the US, but most people in the USSR didn't think they were poor. Stalin was a bad guy, but like Hitler, did good as well and the whole history of the Soviet Union shouldn't be judged by that more than the US should be blamed for genocide and puppet dictatorships. The US and the USSR suppressed political opinions that didn't suit their society (though the USSR did way worse with this) and they were both propaganda states. Personally, I think socialism is shit but I think if the Soviet Union didn't dissolve but the Gorbachev reforms still passes, with the exception of Moscow's upper class, government (even that's questionable) and Baltic prosperity I don't think those areas would be that different. So in short, the Soviets weren't the good guys, but neither is the US.
