I get why there are US places named after European cities and holy places from the bible, but what's up with places like Lebanon, Thebes, and Memphis?

I was in Gaylord earlier today.

I had something called "pasties" for lunch.

You see how this works?

Another two thousand or so years before that, I think? I could be wrong.

The presence of cities in the south with Biblical, Greco-Roman, Egyptian names or otherwise was an early attempt at drawing parallels between the South and other societies from antiquity which had practiced slaveholding.

The presence of Greco-Roman names in Upstate New York (Syracuse, Utica, Troy, Ithaca, just to name a few) are from a completely different tradition, however.

Gaylord is a first name, as well. It's pronounced more like "gaylerd."

Also, hell I think is classified as a town, as it's too small to be called a city. I had am RA in my dorm, who came from there. The mayor changes like every week (I think you can buy the title for a day or so, just to say you're mayor of hell), but it's usually some guy who owns a business of significant size there, if I'm not mistaken.
