The short answer is the United States wanted to prevent Germany supremacy in Europe. The United States helped the British and French maintain their states and prevent a massive German Empire which could then bully the Americans.

Ignore all the other posters in this thread. They all have the wrong idea. The real reason we went to war is complex and it can't be narrowed down to one factor. However, the biggest influence on our decision was the amount of money we had lended to the Allies. We needed to get our money back. German attacks on American shipping, the Zimmerman telegram, and worries about German imperial power all helped shift opinion in favor of the war.

It's all about power... U.S.A saw their chance to crush the Axis and improve their own standing on the world scene. They saw the Reich was faltering and they knew Stalin would conquer literally everything if they didn't stop him. So as the Reich fell it was a scramble to seize control of the area that was now up for grabs. U.S.A jumped in at just the right time and managed to secure most of Europe. A few weeks of delays by the G.I:s and maybe all of Europe would be part of U.S.S.R today. Crazy thought.

Well, the US was seen as a tyrannical regime ever since the American Civil War, where the North had subjugated the peaceful South because of slave's rights to secede. They had also subjugated Hawaii after a brutal war with the Spanish.
To restore the image of a justice loving country, America went to war with the supposedly evil Germany that had massacred civilians in Holland and were the first to use poison gas at Verdun.
