allegiance to "actually existing socialism". say you were a communist in the 20th century, pre sino-soviet split. capitalism and imperialism are falling everywhere, except for the imperialist states like europe, the us, and their lackeys like japan. people all over the world are throwing off the chains of capitalism thanks to the inspiration of marxism-leninism, soviet financing, etc. if you want to fight for the socialist future, you essentially have two options: go along with it, accepting that it's flawed, but hoping that you can work from within to change things since you're on the same team, or somehow try to fight both capitalism and stalinism at the same time, realistically making you impotent against both or a capitalist lackey since by hurting the ussr you necessarily help capitalism.

realistically, how could the ussr have survived without adopting a policy of socialism in one country? spreading world revolution wasn't going to work with how feeble the state was following the civil war. had the german soviets succeeded, that's one thing. the world would be a different place and who knows if the success of the russian and german revolutions back to back could have inspired the french next, etc. but when there was nobody but them (and mongolia)? they had to consolidate and rapidly advance to survive. it was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. stick to your ideals and die or betray your beliefs and try to fight another day

I think the fact that Socialism in One Country became necessary was proof that the revolution failed. IMO, as soon as Europe failed to follow suit and rise up, the dream was dead. I guess I can't expect the Bolsheviks to have admitted this, but I think Soviet Russia had lost its window of opportunity by 1922 at the latest.
