Simon Bolivar: A Life
John Lynch
Simin Bolivar was a revolutionary who freed six countries, an intellectual who argued the principles of national liberation, and a general who fought a cruel colonial war. His life, passions, battles, and great victories became embedded in Spanish American culture almost as soon as they happened. This is the first major English-language biography of “The Liberator” in half a century. John Lynch draws on extensive research on the man and his era to tell Bolivar’s story, to understand his life in the context of his own society and times, and to explore his remarkable and enduring legacy. The book illuminates the inner world of Bolivar, the dynamics of his leadership, his power to command, and his modes of ruling the diverse peoples of Spanish America. The key to his greatness, Lynch concludes, was supreme will power and an ability to inspire people to follow him beyond their immediate interests, in some cases through years of unremitting struggle. Encompassing Bolivar’s entire life and his many accomplishments, this is the definitive account of a towering figure in the history of the Western hemisphere.

That territory

With Mr. Order and Progress, Porfirio Díaz
>>

Hello Paraguay
>>
>>72046
Big depopulated territory. It didn't have a real national identity due to more than 60 different cultures grouped under the same flag dominated by the white europeans.
General inequality of all its inhabitants, and the expulsion of the only rich people in the country (spaniards) led to an uneducated and poor population in debt with superpowers (France, England and Spain).
The independentist movement ended up with the same people the independentists were fighting against because they suddenly decided that independence was a good idea (Iturbide, the first mexican "emperor"), which led to a war between conservatives and liberals for more than 100 years after the event.
European and American interventionism every few decades (see the first and second French interventions and the Mexican american war).

Pretty much all of it happened, Mexico was doomed to fail since it's inception.

Trujillo, not a bad economic manager, but basically rape squads and secret police are not the way to run a government

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parsley_Massacre

The popular name[5] for the massacre came from the shibboleth that the dictatorial Trujillo had his soldiers apply to determine whether or not those living on the border were native Afro-Dominicans or immigrant Afro-Haitians. Dominican soldiers would hold up a sprig of parsley to someone and ask what it was. How the person pronounced the Spanish word for parsley (perejil) determined their fate. French and Haitian Creole pronounce the r as a uvular approximant—thus, their speakers can have difficulty pronouncing the alveolar tap or trill of Spanish.[6] The Dominican soldiers realized that most Haitians had difficulty pronouncing perejil, so if the person could pronounce perejil with a trill, they considered that person Dominican and let him or her live. However, they considered people who pronounced perejil without the trill as Haitian, and executed them.

Never recovered from Diaz desu

The PRI outside of Cardenas continued the imbalanced growth with slight reforms to make the poor smarter and more class aware, but in the end did nothing to stem the tide of American money and soft-imperialism. Then in the 80s like the rest of the world implemented neoliberalism that was palatable enough to the PAN that they were one in the same and "free and fair" elections could take place that were less rigged so Fox and Calderon could actually win. (Of course the PRD will never win)

I know some people will hate me for this but i spoke a few years back with someone from venezuela and she told me chavez had in fact helped his country a lot. The money obtained trough the commerce of oil gave the country economic growth and an increase of a middle class while before there were much more poverty at the hands of a small elite. He even made it possible for Venezuela to get in the mercosur allowing more chance for comerce. I dont know how they are faring with maduro now.

I really hate that quote.

Yes, the United States has seeked its own prosperity at the expense of other nations. Of course it has, literally every powerful nation has done that to some extent or another, they wouldn't be powerful if they didn't. You shouldn't be asspained that they did it you should be asspained that our politicians and leaders were at various times (and still are) too self serving and incompetent to do the same or do it to the same extent. That they let themselves be puppets and pawns of the US, Germany, France, Russia or the UK, that they didn't look south and start dominating and exploiting the weaker Latin American nations, that they didn't expand the navy and set up a small colonial empire, that they didn't reach out and seek greatness.

That's on us, not who our neighbor is.

Look at Germany, right in between various superpowers for most of its history, weak for most of its history, bullied, manipulated and beaten for most of its history, rose to be one of the worlds greatest empires twice. The list goes on, Japan, Austria-Hungary, Rome, Poland, Portugal, all surrounded maybe even dominated by great powers but all pushed and clawed their way to power and prosperity even if their stance in it was brief.

Mexico isn't fucked because we're close to the United States, we're fucked because we let that matter.

* Took Argentina, then a sleepy backwater, and turned it into the one of the wealthiest countries on Earth by the time of his second term
* Made education secular, universal and compulsory, built thousands of schools
* As Minister of War, doubled the territory under effective government control by beating back hostile native tribes
* Opened up the country to a mass wave of foreign investment and immigration
* Made Buenos Aires a federal capital separate from the province, ending decades of conflict
* Founded the city of La Plata
* Civil (secular) Marriage Law
* Wheat was first exported in significant amounts during his first term (1880-1886)... by the time of his second term (1898-1904), Argentina was the world's main exporter

It's pretty interesting. Chile actually militarily stared down the US, annexed land from biolivia and basically got rich as fuck.

It was basically the seeds of what makes Chile different from other SA nations. They are naturally more first world than the others.

Chavez, much like any other great banana republic leader, had a great political traction that died once he himself died.

Chavez had put down the fucking elite in Venezuela like three times. Maduro has not nearly enough power to dissuade such pressure. So the elite kills the country and together Maduro loses even more international face and internal support.

Such is life in this god forsaken continent.
