Major protagonists: Lincoln, Halleck, Stanton, McClellan, Grant, Sherman, Pinkerton, Burnside. McClellan and Pinkerton giving away to Thomas and Sheridan.
Comic relief with Mrs. Lincoln. Exposition from the press. Antagonists: the south, Congress. About a year per season.
Byzantine and Sassanid political life along with depictions of major battles during the Byzantine-Sassanid War. Final season is the Muslim invasion, with the final episode having Heraclius' death.
Wouldn't survive but I like the notion of the Greek Heroic Age being the series, with each generation/period being a season.
Season 1 - Perseus and more of the Gods origins, olympians vs Titans and shit.
Season 2 - Argonauts and Heracles.
Season 3 - Oedipus and Seven Against Thebes.
Season 4/5 - Trojan war.
Thing is Season 1 and 3 would pale in comparison to 2 and 4/5, and the Trojan war and related stuff could be its own show. So you'd be better of doing either Argonauts & heracles' period or Trojan war period.
